Took DS to Pre-school so missed this. Not very persuasive then? See they did need your input. JV getting on my pip at the moment - just lets his interviewees get away with so much. And why does he have that weird woman from the Alan Sugar programme on? Think she's barking mad.

Cod - I was thinking of getting that book. Is it good, then? Want to apply to be a mag this year. Am going to start observing regularly when (!) ds2 has sorted his toilet training and I can foist him onto pre-school more. (Sorry, I meant, encourage his individuality by making opportunities for him to socialise outside the home. )

So what is it about the role that you cannot recommend highly enough? And why, if it's so great, aren't there more people clamouring to be one? Just curious.

Much as I thought. I applied about 8 years ago but, partway through the interview process, discovered I was pregnant with DS3 so pulled out. Just didn't think the duties were compatible with a very small child, not to mention the childcare for the other 2 as well. DS3 is now in Y3 so maybe I'll try again.

Yes, I know. It was more the logistics of it all. Still DS1 is now at secondary school, so he doesn't really need looking after and I could probably fob the other 2 off on a friend (or a childminder if necessary), so it's much more doable now.

There is, but I think it's for "regulars". Not sure if they take children on an ad hoc basis. It's not much of a problem. I have a friend who is a childminder and has taken the boys previously when I've been on a course for CAB, or the mum of DS2's best friend is always willing to have them (subject to other commitments).

cod - can I ask an odd(ish) question - I understand the oath has some kind of 'apply the law without fear' type of phraseology... to what extent do you ever have concerns wrt your personal privacy or safety, or that of your family etc. re: sentencing, criminality etc. ?

Just wondering as I presume one's name and the area which you serve are public information etc. etc.
