I just think of those chilean miners down there for months

But marvellous that they managed to get each and every one out alive.

its really awful...just watched it on the welsh news a moment ago.

there has been no communication from them, and it seems that water and flooding are blocking their escape route. the news did say though that they would know where to go to avoid the water.

we can only hope that they are safe and well and maybe tomorrow will bring progress with their rescue.

im scared of the dark, and claustraphobic....im in a panic just thinking about it....

I don't know why, but I am in tears this morning having heard that one of these miners has died.

I know that people, dads, husbands, anyone - die all the time.
Maybe it is because I am 34 wks pg.
Maybe it is because I am a geologist/engineer and have worked with mines a lot.
Maybe it is because I used to live near Swansea, and my brother still does.
Maybe it is because I live in a working pit village myself (Yorkshire not Wales).
Maybe it is because I work with an ex-miner.

But for whatever reasons, this story - reality - has hit me hard.

Bike, its not because of any of those things. I'm not pregnant, I've never been a geologist. I live in an ex mining town but it hasn't been a working town since way before I was born. I don't know any ex-miners. But I'm still crying. I'm still sad for them that a life has been lost in this tragedy. I'm am hoping so so hard that other 3 made it to the safe room in time.

But i didn't give a toss when Amy Winehouse died and the rest of the world went into mourning! Maybe Amy W didn't seem like a "real" person to me, but a hands on, coal-face, miner does. I am off work today and will have the radio on all day.

I am feeling it too BikeRunSki, but I think because I've been researching family history, which includes a lot of miners. Also, I have been thinking a lot about a woman I saw on the Welsh news yesterday, a woman who lives by the mine, and she said "this used to happen all the time when I was a child". It's very very sad. :(

Bike, I was the same, was totally indifferent when she died. I think its because she kind of brought it on herself, and was just a pop star (can't think of any other way to put it) but these are real men, with families waiting for them

to be fair, amy winehouse was a real person with a family who loved her...

i dont really think that its an appropriate comparison to make, but i'm sure you weren't trying to be inflamatory.

i feel really sad too.... it must be just horrific for those families just waiting to find out about their loved ones.

I wasn't trying to be inflammatory at all, and I appreciate that Amy Winehouse was a real person with friends and family who still love and mourn her. Especially her dad who is being very proactive about promoting causes and charities close to her.

The point I was trying to make is that I am not normally affected by the death of someone I don't know, and I was wondering why I have been struck by these miners. I was thinking maybe it is because I can relate to them and their lifestyles and work much more than I can to that of a pop star from London.

I apologise if I offended any fan's of Amy's.

no, i know..i wasn't looking for a fight. its all cool.

i think its because its about "normal" people going about their every day lives.

life can be taken away so suddenly.....this is a harsh reminder i think. i really hope the other 3 are ok....it looks like the man they have found might have been trying to escape with the 3 that got out, but was held back by the water.

Mines are horrible places to work. It pisses me off that so many people who moan about them being shut down are the type of people that would never have dreamt of working down one whilst they were still open.

JLK2 - maybe not the time to get political, but I can't let that comment go without saying - they weren't closed down for health and safety reasons, you know - but because of the globalisation of energy markets and the don't care-a-fuckness of Thatcher.

May those miners survive - poor souls.
