According to a bloke on the radio this morning its all food that comes in jars eg jam, mayo, beetroot etc not just baby food. So it seems to me that the media are highlighting baby food because of an agenda of their own. ie make mothers feel guilty about using jars, more likely to be a greater response to baby food than jam etc.

it's the rubber sealant around the jars which is the culprit, apparently. I think the warning to mothers is not to create guilt but to warn as babies are the most vulnerable.

I have to say that I think it is mostly scaremongering. I tend to feed DD homemade stuff but she does have jars when I'm low on stocks and need to get cooking.

Trouble is with these things is the initial research often comes from things like feeding rats with whatever they think is dodgy. If I fed a rat with rubber sealant I wouldn't expect to live a long healthy life. Ok, that's a bit sarky but what I mean is that until they do proper long-term research it's all just scare stories.

I bet they won't come back in a year and say yep, we were right. You just won't hear any more about it.

Sometimes it just makes you feel so weary doesn't it?

Mind you I'm just fed up because I'm pregnant and would love some pate and toast... Liver and onions would be nice too and don't get me started on sushi...

Pumpkin soup it is then.

babies can't break vit A down when in utero, build up can be toxic, so thats why liver is now banned

I think in the grand scheme of things there are probably things we should be more worried about, how about TBT in nappies (Bioaccumulative, hormone distrupters) Triclosan/Microban in all those surface cleaners, anti bacterial hand wash, toothpaste etc (has been found to be a contaminate in human breast milk and the Danish government have issued warnings not to use it)
Have you ever thought that it takes about half a cup of crude oil to make the gel in nappies which holds the wee. It's been banned in tampoons, so why do you let it get so close to your DS/DDs "bits"
I'm not a "tree hugger" but these things have to be put into context with the other risks we expose our children to.

The retinol form of Vitamin A is bad, the betacarotene form is good. So you're ok getting Vit A from green veg, just not from anything that is yummy.

Don't worry Dinosaur, most of us were probably 'liver rich' babies. I was 'stout rich' too as my mother had a glass of stout every day throughout her pregnancy!
