Only reuters confirming it at the moment, but this sunday will be the last edition of the paper...

Poledra Thu 07-Jul-11 16:48:11

So NI can distance the rest of the group from its shady goings-on. Oh look, we've closed it down, it's all OK now, can we have BSkyB please?

CogitoErgoSometimes Thu 07-Jul-11 16:48:44

Great news and a great pun all in one go... what more could you ask?

CombineArvester Thu 07-Jul-11 16:48:57

Yeh and what's the betting the Sun decides to do a Sun on Sunday instead?

ThePathanKhansWoman Thu 07-Jul-11 16:50:41

The Power of Mumsnet grin <walks off in dazed wonder.>

GwendolineMaryLacey Thu 07-Jul-11 16:50:45

Wow. That's pretty big news. Agree with everything above but it's been going for over 150 years.

GwendolineMaryLacey Thu 07-Jul-11 16:51:41

And, of course, they've ensured mega readership for the final edition...

ClaireDeLoon Thu 07-Jul-11 16:52:48

'So NI can distance the rest of the group from its shady goings-on. Oh look, we've closed it down, it's all OK now, can we have BSkyB please?'

My thoughts exactly Poledra.

It's a ploy by Murdoch to sweep it all under the carpet. CombineArvester is right, give it a few weeks and there will be a "Sun on Sunday" to fill the gap, churning out the same crap journalism.

Meanwhile Murdoch will have washed his hands of the whole affair and the politicians, on both sides, will be licking his arse again.

Best. News. Ever!

Confirmed by BBC News. News. Ever!

Just been watching SkyNews, James Murdoch statement
Extraordinary

flippinada Thu 07-Jul-11 16:57:32

Bloody phone.

Agree, its probably a distraction tactic. Sadly. Still pleased though.

BitOfFun Thu 07-Jul-11 16:59:34

Woah, I wasn't expecting that!

PurpleStrawberryGuava Thu 07-Jul-11 17:02:30

Closing the paper doesn't change anything though, as what was done was done.

CogitoErgoSometimes Thu 07-Jul-11 17:03:36

Murdoch's sacrificial lamb indeed. But I don't think it'll be enough to let the BSkyB deal go through and I also think that he has a lot to do to get rid of the 'damaged goods' tag. If a Murdoch publication supports a political party in future, is it going to make us more or less likely to vote for it?

Rollergirl1 Thu 07-Jul-11 17:03:39

It's shocking but I'm not surprised.

herecomesthsun Thu 07-Jul-11 17:06:17

Yaaaaaaaaaaay

starmucks Thu 07-Jul-11 17:10:45

What does this mean for Rebekah Brooks? Just because the paper will cease to exist does not exonerate her. What about Cameron? Does it mean that he's forgiven for hiring Andy Coulson as his press officer DESPITE having been forewarn of his shady practices while at NOTW? Do we no longer question his judgement for having cozy dinners with Brooks and her husband either?

NI international owns the The Times too, I hope everyone will boycott it too from now on.

Quenelle Thu 07-Jul-11 17:13:05

The current editor and staff are carrying the can then.

TalkinPeace2 Thu 07-Jul-11 17:14:39

Watch for the Sunday Sun on the news stand within the month

The name will change
the staff and attitudes will not until Rebekah is in prison where she belongs.

CogitoErgoSometimes Thu 07-Jul-11 17:17:10

Rest assured that the paper trail won't stretch as far as Wade. Murdoch wouldn't be standing by her if it did. We're reliant on people turning whistleblower...

Cogito
which they clearly are - hence the daily drip drip of new stories
SOMEBODY has that email list
and the new lady at the Met is actually looking at Mulcaire's notebooks
fingers crossed

niceguy2 Thu 07-Jul-11 17:24:03

Very shrewd move by Murdoch.

By closing the NoTW he's able to insulate the rest of his empire by making it look like he's taken bold action.

At the same time in a few weeks, he will make The Sun a sunday paper and in reality it's the same paper anyway.

Newspaper's are losing money handover fist anyway so in fact from his point of view he's saving money too!
