SOUTHAMPTON HEART UNIT IN JEPOARDY! PLEASE HELP!

The children's heart unit at Southampton General Hospital's Ocean Ward is the SECOND HIGHEST performing centre in the country. Its future is now in doubt and we need your help to save it. Please log onto //www.saveourheartunit.org and fill in the online consultation questionnaire to show your support (choose option B for Southampton).

The heart unit at Southampton is excellent and saved my little boy's life when he was just two weeks old. He will need a big operation at 5 or 6 years and it will break my heart to leave his sister at home and travel to Bristol or London with a lower standard of care.. my little man deserves the best, as do all the other children currently depending on the fantastic staff at Southampton. Please help!

The Isle of Wight council is fighting plans to close the childrens' heart surgery unit in Southampton.

The council said the island was overlooked when it came to measuring travelling times to other units because it shares its postcode with Portsmouth

It will take over three hours to get to another unit on the mainland which is longer than recomended

How on earth did the blithering idiots ignore the sodding Solent and the need to get over it by flaming boat.

Just what part of ISLE dont they understand

It does seem bonkers to get rid of one of the best performers.

The thing about forgetting to consider the isle of wight is especially daft, and must also be a worry for islanders.

MD in Private Eye was pointing out the stupidity of forgetting the Isle of Wight. But it sounded as if that was the only reason to save Southampton - I think he was saying they just don't do enough surgery to maintain their skills.

I read the article by MD as well.
Southampton's problem is that it is too near to other places
the standards are EXCELLENT, all of the surgeons would be moved to the remaing two units at Bristol and London
BUT heaven help the kid who needs help from the Island as the NHS won't be able to.
