Very sad - but I can't say it makes me dread the days when my kids go on school trips such as that one.

You here plenty of dreadful stories of children (and their parents) dying on family holidays

personally I would hate to do anything like that & I don't know what I would do if my DS wanted to do it on a school trip. I wouldn't like not to let him go if it was somehthing he really wanted to do - but I would be worried sick. At the moment he's only 5 though, so bit of a way to go yet!

I'm unfashionably cautious about school trips, and I make the decision based on which teachers are going and whether I trust them with my son's life; also whether his close, trustworthy mates are going. (This may sound a little extreme.) I also lecture him about safety and how he doesn't have to do stuff if his gut instinct tells him not to - even if the teacher or instructor tells him he must. I can't help remembering the girl who said she would drown when asked to cross a river - because she was so slightly built - and then she did. Then I sit by the phone all week (well, not quite...)

life is full of dangers. we all learn to live with them. kids must too. if we didnt, then we'd nrever make it out of the play pen.
