Prince William gives Kate his Mum's engagement ring

He says it is to make him feel like his mother is part of the wedding which, under the circumstances is a completely understandable sentiment. Must have been awful for him to lose her at such a young age and difficult now to get married without her being there. Not sure I would fancy that ring if I were the soon to be Princess Catherine though, given the way Chas and Diana's marriage turned out.

That said, she was hardly in a position to knock it back I suppose.

Meh to the rest of it, but I think given the economy at the moment I think it's nice to have given her that than find out he's spent a bloody fortune on a new one

He evidently adored his mother. It's lovely to see that he still acknowledges how important she was to him.

are they getting married then?

Not sure I'd want something that was the symbol of my late mil's unhappiness. Hmm

I used my late mother's wedding ring as my own, although she and my father had seperated before she died. It's lovely to have something she wore with me.

It was a bit 80s as well

It was a bit 80's. Expect colored stones will come back in a big way now though. Elizabeth Duke will be ripping it off already

I think it is different if it is your own mother's. No idea of your circumstances but it is well publicised that Diana was unhappy in her marriage for pretty much all of it bar the first couple of years.

Hmmmm. No, as Waity Katie I would have wanted better given how long Wills has had to save up for something special, lol.

"Diana was unhappy in her marriage for pretty much all of it bar the first couple of years."

so the ring is from a time when she was still very happy?

I think it's sweet.

LOL HalfTermHero Grin

I'm not sure I'd want a rock on my finger that symbolised one of the most famously unhappy marriages in recent history, but she was probably so delighted to finally be asked that she would have taken anything.

My first reaction was - Nooooo!

Then I heard why he did and and thought - OK

Then I wondered how Prince Charles would feel about that symbol of his failed marriage and thought - Tough he deserved it

But Herhonesty's point is best

Camilla will have to look at it - Yessss! Revenge is sweet.

It's the ugliest ring in the world.

Poor Kate having to wear it!

Damned if he gone out and splashed out on a super duper De Beers knuckle duster.

Damned if he has been a bit thrifty and given his mothers ring .

Good luck to them both .

I think it's a lovely idea. As I have no DDs I will be leaving my engagement / eternity rings to my DSs, and hope that they would use them in the same way.

Jewellery is often passed on in the Royal Family. The Queen's engagement ring contains a diamond that belonged to Prince Phillip's mother. Camilla's engagement ring used to belong to the Queen Mother. It's a sentimental & special piece for Prince William... a ring his late mother chose... and in terms of history and provenance, it's totally unique. You wouldn't pass up the chance to own an original Van Gogh just because it didn't match the furniture...
