washer turning clothes browny colour

pils bought us a new washer xmas 2008, its been fine untill now... every so often it turns light clothes an awful brown colour, my ds has jogging bottoms with a white stripe down each leg and one of the stripes has went brown, other has remained white,
im really worried as dh work shirts are cream and the england tops are bright white,scared to wash them anyone any advice?

have you cleaned out the dispenser drawer, cleaned the filter and run it on a 90 degree wash with no clothes and just your normal detergent (preferably biological)?
