Nettiespagetti · 22/06/2010 19:24

Does anyone have any idea how to
clean maclaren buggy handles. Got techno xt and handles are really sticky no idea how they got like that but it's like plastic is melting or something.

Help

Someone told me that this can happen if you have suncream on your hands.

I have just bought a secondhand Maclaren Techno XT and it has sticky, peeling handles. At the moment I have put a pair of socks over them! But you can buy handlebar tape from a cycle shop, or from e-bay.

I've got this problem too. Looked for WD40 in the supermarket for something else the other day and couldn't find it (live in France, so if anyone knows the French equivalent please let me know).

Otherwise is handlebar tape the only option?

I rubbed hand cream in which solves the problem temporarily. Once soaked in/worn off you have to do it again, but it seems to be working so far.

I have this too, had assumed it's because we keep the buggy outside! I tried sticky stuff remover from B&Q but i think that merely coated them as the stickiness came back. I was wanting silicone skins like for a phone or something, but I think that's wishful thinking. Tape sounds like a good idea.

I've sent this thread to McLaren customer service to see what they say. Will report back unless they come on here themselves with some advice.

NB - I was about to start with alcohol hand cleanser - will wait to hear first.

my handles are almost disintergrating. seriously. every time i use it my grip is covered in tiny bits of the grey coating. and as i've said this has now worn bear and the white is showing in an area about 6cm x 1.5 cm.
this all happened when it wasn't raining or damp. or summer , so no suntancream. no handcream. it is stored in the shed. i have it in my boot with the handles up in the air, so not even scrapping/leaning on anything at all. i just don't 'get it'

await customer servcie reply, eagerly.

Sorry for the delay. Maclaren did get back to me last week but I couldn't post immediately, and it wasn't very helpful...

I am sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing with the handles on your Maclaren Techno XT, however without seeing the handles it is very difficult for me to comment on the problem regarding the handles becoming sticky. I can only therefore suggest that you contact the retailer from whom the product was purchased and ask them to contact us with regards to having your buggy returned to us for a full examination.

I am sorry that I cannot be of more assistance to you at this time, but can assure you that once your buggy has been received by our service department at Maclaren we will certainly give it our utmost attention.

If you are experiencing any difficulties in returning your buggy to the retailer please contact me so I can make an alternative arrangement to have your buggy returned.

Oblamov - mine are the same. Large chunks of the handle are coming off and its very gummy.

It happened after we stored it in the garage over winter while I used the P&T. Now I am back to only needing a single pram but its actually quite unpleasant to push.

McCLaren's repsonse a bit pish, I am afraid. I may email them too.

My pram is nearly four years old - I don't know if this has any bearing on the matter.

I once had an ancient Fiat with a sticky gearshift. After years of use by my dad and brother, when it was passed down to me the gearshift was covered in black grime--the plastic would get hot and melt slightly, then when you touched it, the dirt from your hand would stick to it. You could scrape it off with your fingernail but it would just grow back in a week. I put a sock over it and blithely used it til I went off to university.

Got passed down to my little brothers in turn (my dad doesn't get new cars until the old ones are DEAD, that particular one had to be towed away after they had stripped it for parts for their NEXT fiat.) Apparently, the gearshift ate the sock I put on it and they had to put another one on.

The point of all this is to say, I don't think you can cure the stickiness. I think replacement handles or bike handle tape would be your best bet, smearing handcream etc on it will just break it down further.

Very disappointed with Maclaren XT.

Appart from the sticky handles, they are also too high.
Basket v difficult to access when seat reclined.
Tips very easily with a change bag on the handles.
Recliner mechanism really fiddly to use and so is the foot rest.
Brakes are not great - you think you have pushed them on but they don't always click into place properly (not good).
Very clattery on pavements.
One plus point is the hood - much bigger than other buggies of this type and very useful to protect from all weathers without worrying about adding stupid parasols etc.
