What are the best work tops?

Hi

Just like Zozzle I am looking for a new kitchen and I am not sure waht work top to go for.

I have decided on reading the Wooden Work Top thread that wooden will just be too much work for me. I am not

So I think that leaves me - Marble, Granite, laminates or something I have read about called spomething like Corian (not sure exactly the spelling)

We are thinking of a slate tiles floor and either cream or oak units - so I thought maybe black worktops??

Anyway any advice appreciated.

DH and I love our laminate worktops. DH splashes like a mad man whenever he washes up, so wood was never going to be an option.

Looks wise, we would actually have liked poured concrete, but it seemed a bit impractical.

So we have laminate and are very happy. Wasn't particularly cheap to get attractive laminate, though, although much cheaper than marble / granite / Corian.

I'd always go fir granite as can put hot things down on it straight out if oven, v easy to clean/ care for. Totally robust. Marble likely to stain as usuallhnporous and more expensive so not good option. Don't know anything about Corian, but I'm on my 3rd kitchen now and def stick w. Granite (getting black granite thus time)

Corian is the most expensive I believe, and quite sleek, but I'm not keen as it's too "perfect".

My fav are marble (though it gets stained by oil, vinegar and lemon juice... ) and solid wood. But again, I like imperfect surfaces

Granite is the most robust and you can get all sorts of colours nowadays.

We've slate and a diy experimental zinc island top. Both great but would n't have too much metal around.
