I have tried using candles, plug ins, incense sticks and air freshners but cannot really get rid of the smell of cooking! it's too cold to keep the windows open too. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Extractor fan that works (and has clean filters!)
A short blast with the windows open, make sure there is a through breeze, i.e. not just one side of the room with a window/door open - fresh air is really the only way to actually clear the air!
Close the kitchen door while cooking to at least contain it.

I find insense the best for replacing the smell personally.

I like open windows, even in winter, but have you tried a Price's Cook's Candle?

Quite expensove but worth it. From proper cookshops, harware stores and Lakeland might still do them
