Lost wedding ring

Not mine but my DH's. I put it on my finger intending to go straight downstairs and give it to him. However, I got distracted looking for a particular top and rummaged through piles of clothing in two different rooms, then noticed it was gone. Have started searching but no sign yet and feel terrible not only that I've lost it, but that I haven't been able to find it so far because the house is so cluttered and messy. Am worried that it will just not turn up at all

Has anyone else had this happen? Would a metal detector find it? (it's platinum). I am getting desperate now.

My dh lost his (white gold) ring in the garden earlier this year. After 3 trips to a metal detector emporium 50 miles away and an astonishing glimpse into this world of passionate exponents of that art, he found it via a simple fingertip search of the (not-exactly-huge) garden. His advice to you is that a metal detector will just bleep all the time it's in your house, so do an exhaustive search room by room. An occasion when low-tech is best. Can you get your kids to help? I know how awful it is: I lost my engagement ring for a bout half a day at my Mum's last year.

Thanks jkklpu. I will go with the fingertip search. The room where I think it is is the most cluttered and messy in the house! That'll teach me. My DS is only 11 months so might find it but would probably try and eat it Cheers me up to know someone else found a ring this way.

Start in the place you last know you had it and start looking as if you haven't yet. It can't have gone far. Is your DH helping you look?

True story here. My aunt lost her engagement ring. No idea where it had got to. Searched the whole house, top to bottom, no luck.

Four years later, she was out in the garden weeding. She was bending over a plant to pull it up, and saw something sparkling around it. She looked closer, and saw that the plant had grown up through the ring and pushed it out of the soil. She thinks that she must have dropped the ring into the compost bucket while preparing veg, put the compost bucket into her compost heap, spread the compost on the flower bed, and the ring was carried with it. So there's always hope!

Thanks for asking about progress. No, have had no chance to look today as have been at work, then driving DH to his Xmas do where he is staying overnight. The rooms it must be in are the coldest in the house and are pretty cold at night, so I am going to return to the thorough search in daytime when the light's better and it's warmer. Tomorrow we are out all day visiting family so it'll be Sunday when I get back to it.

Thanks for the useful tips and stories though. Grendelsmum that's amazing though I hope I find this one more quickly!

I will make sure I return and post triumphantly when I find it [positive thinking emoticon].

This has renewed my embarrassment at my cluttered house, so I think the universe is teaching me a lesson. The one room is so bad I could not even ask friends to come in and help me search. So will have to clear as I go and multi-task.
