Using DAZ in the dishwasher???

Ran out of dishwasher tablets last nite so DH decided to use ordinary washing powder. It worked an absolute treat and obviously alot cheaper. Does anyone know if its inadvisable or that it may damage the dishwasher??

Surely was better to have run the machine with nothing? Or wash up in sink??

Can't see why it shouldn't work in emergency as you did. Why should it damage the machine? You'll need to use salt though.

Did it not make the dishes taste of soap?

Ew, I wouldn't TBH.

Would rather get the rubber gloves & liquid out and do it the old fashioned way until I could get to the shops.

Without reading up on it, clothes washing powder may leave chemicals on the utensils that aren't meant to be ingested?

Plus long term it would probably damage your machine due to a build up of deposits.

Interesting to hear that it worked. Guess he didn't use very much of it. Foaming I suspect may become an issue.

I would have tried a small amount of White vinegar ... that's used for descaling things so expect it's quite good at cleaning the inner workings of the machine as well as the dishes. Anyone know if that does work?

I've tried Fairy before as well. DH went nuts as the kitchen disappeared under a mountain of foam. Was like an Ibiza nightclub.

Yes, would have been better to don rubber gloves but had had a long, exhausting day...... Have also tried the fairy liquid route, very bubbly. Utensils seemed fine, have eaten off them and am still alive(ish). Will buy some normal tablets after readin g some of the comments! Real money saving idea would of course be to say goodbye to the dishwasher...........yeah, right!

Nanny Nick, yes white vinegar works a treat to de-scale the dishwasher and washing machine. Much cheaper than products by Finish for example.

Not sure about it for actually washing the dishes though, the dishwasher usually smells a bit vinegary afterwards!!

Have you ever tried Lidl dishwasher tablets? Verrrrr cheap and as good as Finish.
