Spanking new Flybaby "nursery" thread - learn how to Fly for the month of September only

Countingthegreyhairs · 31/08/2009 13:42

Hello. Does anyone want to join/re-join us for a mutual "kick-up-the-bum" motivational thread starting tomorrow 1st September?

[Then we can join the main Flying threads thereafter if we want to.)

We did the same throughout August

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/good_housekeeping/799866-starting-tomorrow-accelerated-flying-for-month-of-Augu st-only

and it has really helped but being confirmed slatterns extreme cases we feel the need to repeat the exercise throughout September too. We need to declutter, organise, tidy and clean and generally get our lives under control.

All newcomers welcome!

I often wonder what your flying threads are about, I can glean it's somekind of de-cluttering/get off your arse type thing but am none the wiser really

explain please!

Is it do-able if you work full time? I do need some kind of motivation - although I dusted the TV screen today - apparently the kids couldn't see anything

Yo PA!

Hi Ava and Walkthe D

In a nutshell it is a system of household organisation and cleaning that encourages you in to the habit of tackling things little and often so you put minimum but focused efforts in to the areas that matter most.

There are 31 baby-steps (yuck - hate that phrase) which are quite simple and the routines can be completed in 10 mins at either end of the day so no problem keeping up at weekends or while working full time.

I find the Flylady website off-puttingly folksy/perky but the underlying strategy is very sound and very sensible. If you subscribe to the site they send you 10 emails a day so I will be just linking to the baby-steps here every day.

The main Flylady principles are:

Keep your kitchen sink clean and shiny and clutter-free.

Go to bed early at night and get up early and dress straightaway every morning, including lace-up shoes.

Do a few key things every night and every morning to make your day go smoother (ie lay out clothes, identify tasks for next day etc etc - this is covered in baby steps)

Cut down on screen-time no comment!!

Do one job at a time and clear up afterwards.

Don't take on a mammoth clearing task - take small bites - nothing more than one hour's worth.

Do something that you enjoy every day.

Work quickly and in a focused way (I find a timer helps once I can actually get down to it - 15 min chunks.)

Here's the website

Suggest you take a look at Flying Lessons to get a feel of it

PS Getting up off one's arse (as I should now ) is a very good start

Hello i'm back

I don't do the shoes thing and as we are about to have a puppy there will be a strict "no shoes" policy until after he is fully vacinated. I believe the idea of shoes is to treat the housework as if you are doing a job rather then being casual and unorganised as I tend to be (but I could be wrong).

I follow the general ethos of fly but not always the detail and it has improved my home.

I too will be meal planning and getting back to exercise. School holidays are always less organised.

at the shoes.

ok am willing to give it a bash, I work from home but haven't got a clean and tidy house although I can get certain cleaning tasks done during the course of the day as the need arises (washing up, hoovering, mopping). I find that by the end of the day the last thing I want to do is a huge cleanup so it gets left till i have no choice other than spending two hours on it.

I'd love to find a system of organising myself and those "bite-size chunks" sound doable.

Ooo, can I join? I feel I ought, really. My house is a state, and I have no excuse as I'm a SAHM whose kids are at nursery 3 mornings a week...

I'm a lapsed Flyboy - You've just reminded me that I must clean my sink... it's got the veg steamer stacked on it!

My place is tiny and it's constantly a tip... I really must make more of an effort, as small places do get cluttered so quickly. So it will be handy to have someone keeping on nagging reminding me.

Report
AvadaKedavra · 31/08/2009 19:23

I'm going to make sure my sink is shiny before I go to bed :D

Crikey, only went away to stuff myself with pasta eat dinner - what an amazing number of responses, welcome everyone - Flynewbies, newly-launched, lapsed, semi-lapsed, or semi-collapsed (I include myself in the latter category)

[Appraising glance at BennyandJoon - wonders whether a softly softly approach best or whether to try something a little more, well, persuasive]

Lovely to have you all - but please fledglings- may I call for calm - absolutely no trepidation/angst/guilt/or even shoe-lace tying allowed here [stares hard at Sausage Rocket] ....

Yes, PetitMaman, it's a wonderful excuse to Mmsnet daily pitfall but now you've high-lighted it, if any of us see you on any other threads we can always gently re-direct you back to this one .

Here's the first step for tomorrow, Tuesday 1st September

Good luck everyone!

Bennyandjoon - please come in we don't bite and we certainly don't take it all seriously, well I don't anyway!!

earlyonemorning - Oh a proffessional flylady, you will put us all to shame!! Come and show us how its done !!

floaty - Don't worry about it, just take it a day at a time and if you miss a day,
