Can I use a towel on the floor instead of an ironing board?

Bought an iron yesterday but the budget did not stretch to an ironing board. I seem to remember my Dad ironing on a towel on the floor (towel to protect carpet) - but thought I would just check first to see if it would be ok!

Also, any recommendations on where to buy an ironing board?

I use a towel on the table, I iron very rarely so it tends to come out for those iron name labels only!

I have done this, just be careful of your carpet though.

If budget is tight maybe freecycle would be a good place to look for a board.

I've done it on a quilt and on the kitchen worksurface before - towel seems to be hard to iron on, quilt/blanket alot smoother. Tesco have them for £9.97 for a value one

I find a blanket on a table better - the towel can leave a patten on the ironed clothes

i used to always iron on the floor with a towel its fine.

Asda has a basic ironing board for about £7.00 by the way.

I've never owned an ironing board, neither has my mum (now well into her 60's)

table/towel is perfectly fine

Kitchen worktop and towel or folded sheet easier on the back.
I think Ikea does a really cheap ironing board.

OK I have a baby quilt I could use. Freecycle might be an idea. Ikea is never cheap once you get there! grin

Thanks all
