We are looking at getting a Smeg fridge. We just want to know if they are any good or do they just look pretty.

Thanks

Hi
We looked at smeg too, but finally bought a much cheaper retro fridge/freezer from Gorenje. It works fine and looks lovely.
Have a look at gorenje.co.uk, put retro in search box and you should see options.

We bought a cream one but there are other colour options.

Hope this helps.

We bought a SMEG (cream one) because it looks pretty. Absolutely nothing else to recommend it at all. Honestly. Its a fridge!

How much are the Gorenje ones?

We have one. It was a moment of madness really when we found that we could save several grand on our kitchen by switching companies, and felt like we could afford to splash out - and if I'm completely honest the selling point was just that it looks nice

We do love it but hand on heart, it is not particularly better than a normal fridge. The big chunky door is wasted space, there's no more space in it than a normal fridge door. The freezer part (it's a fridge-freezer) needs defrosting as much as any freezer. OTOH the shelves etc are good quality and nicely designed and it is still as good as new a few years on, so I think it's a good product. I get a lot of pleasure out of it (but tbh that is just because it looks pretty).

I've heard bad things about them I'm afraid. Not very efficient and break down a lot.

Smeg appliance in general have a reputation for looking good but not being very well made/durable. (ime)

I've got a Smeg cooker and it is fantastic quality. Love the look of the fridges, but the freezer compartment looks too small.

My friend has one and she hates it - really badly designed. If you put bottles in the door it tips over when the door is opened, even though they've adjusted the legs.
It is beautiful.
Therefore her dh jokes that they have to keep it as a moral lesson about the vanity of judging too much by appearances.

We stayed in a cottage at Xmas with one that didn't even have anywhere to put bottles, despite being massive.

kathy that sounds bad. I've just opened both doors of mine and it was nowhere near tipping over. it also has a lot of bottle storage, both in the door and a horizontal rack in the main part.

Molesworth, our Gorenje fridge freezer was about £640, 3 years ago. We found a local stockist and it is a big saving on over £1000 for a smeg.

Have you thought about the american style fridge/freezers.

I live in an old cottage - kitchen is shaker style and it looks good in that setting as well as more modern ones. Sooooo practical too especially with ice and chilled water dispenser in door and loads of space inside.

a friend has a smeg fridge/freezer, it looks fab, but she says it's useless, storage space is rubbish for the price.

Thanks. Will have a look for something else then. We can't have an American style one as it won't fit in our kitchen. I really want on but no room.

We had a beautiful pastel blue one and i threw it away last year after only three years.
the capacity was crap, the shelves all broke almost imediately. The door shelves didn't holdthings in properly so milk kept falling on to the floor.

Soo pretty but crap. sadly

We have a pastel blue one too. It is too cute for words and is serving us fine but I hardly think it must be the best designed interior in the world.

Also, the freezer bit at the bottom is constantly in need of defrosting and one of the flip down draws from the top shelf has completely broken off (my fault really as got too frustrated with it being stuck/iced in).

But I actually think it's important to have things you find beautiful around you if you can afford them.

I honestly never tire of looking at ours and feeling so smeg that I bought it.
