Need to sort house ready to try to sell as we are fast running out of space & pg with DC2. I'm a self confessed slattern & my very small bathroom in particular is a bit of a state to say the least. There is mildew on the ceiling as well as on the tiles/grouting. I have seen anti-mildew spray but thinking this may work as a temporary measure but is likely to reoccur due to poor ventilation. Will attempt to clean out dust from ceiling fan & hope this will help the problem but can you get special paint to prevent it developing? If so where from? Does it work? Any other suggestions, please?

Yes there are special paints for the ceiling but you need to clean the spores off first.

With tiles, scrub with a diluted bleach solution, using an old toothbrush to get into the grout.

Then use a grout whitenening pen to draw over the old grout and make it look like new again.

AND make sure you keep your bathroom window open a bit more from now on.

Thanks PuzzleRocks & mrsmaidamess. Have done the tiles with bleach before & it works a treat. How do you get rid of the spores? With bleach or anti-mildew spray? I assume you can buy the paint in DIY stores. Is it like a primer or does it work like an ordinary paint?

I used to have to clean my bathroom ceiling regularly cos of a mildew problem. I used a strong kitchen cleaner and it worked fine. You may find it easier with a bleach based cleaner. Although be careful because you are pregnant. The only thing that stopped our damp problem was a slightly open window and a MASSIVE extractor fan!
