Pressure cooker?? Naff or cool??

My FIL is always going on about pressure cookers being brilliant and I always thought yeah, yeah have another sherry love!

BUT I saw something on the TV that said you can cook a chicken stock in half an hour compared to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours normally.

Anyone got any tips?

I've had one for years and yes, you can cook a chicken stock in a relatively short time - I would say 40 mins. Also good for cooking joints of gammon, Christmas puds etc. Excellent piece of equipment.

They scare me!

I much prefer my slow cooker TBH!

My Nan talked me into having a pressure cooker when we got married, even thou I had asked for a slow cooker.

The slow cooker is a fabulous heavy sauce pan but honestly I have only used it properly a couple of times. Admittedly meat very tender. Just hated the noise, thought it would blow!

Use my slow cooker much more, in fact on 2nd slower cooker!

Hmmm is the noise that bad pinkbubble?? I've never used one yet but I'm not good with old fashioned whistling kettles or popping corks etc. A bit skittish some might say .

Am loathed to shell out £80 on a decent one that I'll be too scared to use!

It hisses fairy loudly! (mind you my Nan bought mine 17 yrs ago) But I do use the saucepan a lot without the lid!

NBJB I always make chicken stock and it takes ages!!!! A pressure cooker would save a lot of time and a kitchen dripping in condensation .

My mum swears by hers.I think she has had the same 1 for about 20 years or so.The sound of it hissing brings back childhood memories

Pressure cookers are brilliant!

I made a beef casserole last night - I had forgotten that I had planned to make that.

Chopped two onions, 3 carrots and 4 sticks of celery. Fried the lot, with the beef, till it was soft, then added some red wine and cooked for 15 minutes in the pressure cooker. I then let it carry on cooking normally (i.e. with the lid off) whilst I made the mashed potato and cooked other veg, so altogether it probably cooked for 30 minutes.

It would normally have taken 2-3 hours to get the meet as tender.

Yes, wrinklytum, I can relate to that coz my mum always had a pressure cooker when we were growing up (still has the same one, I think) and she gave me mine about 15 years ago. I have to replace the rubber seal every so often (just a few quid), but otherwise it's still going strong and saving me loads of time, money and condensation!

I miss mine for steamed puddings and stocks, and potatoes and stew. Must buy a new one now I'm an everyday cook, instead of an every now and then one.

Pressure cookers are the big guns. I think they are the mark of a woman who isn't going to let the sound of third degree burns get in the way of a family meal. They're the business. I want one. Gotta lift more weights before i get one though.

Definitely cool not naff - very green, you know, saving loads of energy.

I don't have one but keep thinking I should ... the ones I've seen seemed rather expensive. Hm, MIL usually gives me some dosh with the instruction 'to spend it on something frivolous' (aren't you all at a MIL like that? ) but I might just go for this exceptionally sensible item instead!

Me too Grimma my Christmas money, (ahem should I get any ) will be going towards a pressure cooker I've decided.

I narrowly missed out on getting one from Freecycle last night so I'll have to buy one I guess .

Now, anyone got any good recipes??!
