I went away for the weekend and left a melon on the side and DP in his wisdom did not move it and by the time I got back it had gone very squidy and leaky. Binned it and we wiped everything down thoroughly.

Still fruit flies knocking around - v.annoying. About 5/6 in the kitchen...

Also weird smell from one of our cupboards. It seems a bit like raw beef. We emptied the cupboards out and looked behind them and can't see anything. Still smells though, its not unbareable just not pleasant.

So:
Are the two related? Is the weird smell just bits of mouldy melon?
Is it a dead mouse - and if so what can we do if we have looked behind the cupboard?

Put a sticky fly paper up for the fruit flies then go through all your cupboards again with a fine tooth comb.
Worth washing out your bin too as the bottom of it can get sticky and attract more fruit flies.

Fruit flies are a PITA! I suck them up with the hoover. If you put some honey on a plate then they will stick to it. I'm not sure about the beef smell. maybe give it a good clean with bicarbonate of soda and see if it comes back. Mouldy melon does smell manky though so it might be the same thing.

Poor you! What a thing to come back to.

Fruit flies have gone I think. I cleaned all the cupboards out two weeks ago so am pretty sure they were just with the melon.

The hall smells as well, so we are either infested with dead mice or we have mould underneath the floorboards from when we got flooded under them last year

Ahh, it could be. Sometimes you get use to a smell so you don't notice it. When you go away for a short while and come back then it becomes really obvious. I had a gas leak several years ago, I didn't know. i went to my mums for a few days and could smell it when I got back. I could have blown the house up.
