Friends arrive to house sit on Sat. Just stripped our bed and realise that our mattress is minging, mostly breast milk (yuk - very old stains) and wee from co sleeping toddlers (yuk again - it is ages since anyone slept in our bed).

In a frenzy have applied Upholstery cleaner and scrubbed. No joy. Tried some bio washing powder but I have just created amonia and the room and mattress now stink.

Can it be saved?

I am a filthy slattern.blush

definately buy a mattress protector. It will look much better even if you know what still lurks beneath!

What about turning the mattress over Mehgalegs?

I wondered what on earth you were doing cleaning your mattress when you are about to go on holiday, but then saw you have housesitters. We do too (MIL) Was wondering if I should clean oven for her? I haven't properly cleaned it ever. blush

I washed ds1's mattress in the bath as he had wet his bed several night in the run and it was very smelly. It dried fine in the garden.

I have recently bought some really snuggly mattress protectors and was intending to put them on, but then I thought, what if they decide to strip the bed on their last day and see just exactly what they have been sleeping on blush

I'll just leave a note telling them not to worry about stripping the bed.

Problem is the mattress is now not just stained, it is damp and stinks of amonia.

DG - I think it has been turned several times already. Can#t believe I am admittinf to being such a slattern.

Cornsilk - don't think I'll get a kingsize mattress in our bath and it is peeing down.

Have just rung DH - he recently did a tree job for a bed and mattress man - am hoping he might do us a deal.

I've cleaned our downstairs mildewy one with a carpet cleaner before now

do you have one or can you borrow one?

As notwaving said, but turn it over first. Make sure it's dry first. Mind you, if it smells of amonia, you might do better to get a replacement one and I can recommend for comfort and speed and value for money a memory foam mattress off of e bay. My mum and dad have bought two and I ordered them for them and they arrived on the doorstep the next morning! A double was £139.50 with free delivery. The seller is factory2u-online.

Ooo Capp - my mate has a steam cleaner thing, that might work.

Bicarbonate of soda is very good at removing smells either by sprinkling on and rubbing in, leaving for a couple of hours and hoovering off, or by making a paste which you apply and leave to dry before hoovering. I've also heard vinegar works too to neutralize the smell. Hope you can solve the problem.

Mind you, you can't get a memory foam one wet. Mine specifically states that. So, mine has its cover that comes on it, plus another that I bought from Primark.

JOhn Lewis do zip on mattress covers.

Yes, I've used bi carb before now on an old mattress and on my Ds's when he's wet the bed, it does work well. I'm just wondering now though with Meghalegs using all these different things whether she's going to either melt the mattress or cause a lethal chemical reaction? might be a bit dodgy to keep adding different things.

chapstickchick Tue 05-Aug-08 10:42:34

breast milk ?

Twinkie1 Tue 05-Aug-08 10:44:39

Give it a good wash and then dry it as much as you can with towels and then cover in cat litter which will remove smell and moisture.

Mate with steam cleaner in South of France arse.

Feel a bit giddy from amonia reaction smell.

DH is getting a new mattress - we needed one reaaly. Will keep covered at all times - although now no longer feeding or co sleeping it might have a better chance.

Now off to wrestle old one down the stairs and then burn it in a layby wink
