When grout goes pink

what can I do?

There's something in the water that starts to add a pink film to the white grout and around the shower hose.

It's a real pain to scrub away at the grout to keep it white.

ANy tips, good housekeepers?

Dettol mould and mildew cleaner is fab.

Lakeland? NO idea whether it works, though.

CatIsSleepy Fri 25-Jul-08 17:08:00

you need bleach
Dettol mould and mildew remover spray is good

maidamess Fri 25-Jul-08 17:08:01

Squirt bleach on it.

is it really mould? What causes it?

And will regularly dousing with mould and mildew remover wear away my grout? (This is a new bathroom, I feel rather protective)

pointydog Fri 25-Jul-08 17:10:18

oo, might be sucked in by that lakeland spiel

domestos grot buster, amazing, i just did all the grout in my shower with it, looks good as new!

CatIsSleepy Fri 25-Jul-08 17:11:20

what causes it? general dampness I guess, condensation-need good ventilation so that tiles/walls don't stay wet for too long

I shouldn't think it will wear your grout away but I don't actually know!

StealthPolarBear Fri 25-Jul-08 17:12:12

dettol mould and mildew, definitely
green spray bottle
miracle worker

pointydog Fri 25-Jul-08 17:12:41

so water drying on the tiles causes it?

I could wipe them after a shower too, if that's the case

maidamess Fri 25-Jul-08 17:12:49

Its prevalent in hard water areas. I think it might be the calcium hmm

it's caused by the grout absorbing moisture-you can seal the grout apparently see here for DIY fun

I get this this pink colour around the silicone seal of the shower base, though not on the grout. It's well sealed so I don't think water is getting through the seal.
Is this mould? I didn't have a clue what it was, bleach gets rid of it but what will stop it forming?
Apart from wiping dry the shower after use which I just won't do smile.
I live in a very soft water area.

pointydog Sun 27-Jul-08 12:28:09

yes, get it around the silicon showerscreen too. I hates it

I have the same problem.

Viakal and a scrubbing brush normally works. Rinse off with shower.

From working in housekeeping and leisure centres, I was always told it was body fat....

MrsTiddles Tue 29-Jul-08 12:50:27

oh I feel sick now but I think you could be right.

I'm going to keep refering to it as mildew though.

LadyOfWaffle Tue 29-Jul-08 13:02:40

I got ours off with some sort of mould cleaner - it's gross, isn't it?
