Please recommend a dish drainer

I'm having a kitchen upgrade. I hate to see drainers out on the counter. Wood ones go black and mouldy, metal ones rust, plastic is unsightly, those with a tray underneath just create another annoying small job to empty the tray. Nevertheless, DH will insist, and we shall need somewhere to air-dry the items that come from the dishwasher still wet.

Is there any help available please?

Can you not dry the wet items with a tea towel? I don't have a dish drainer so if I'm washing stuff in the sink I pile it on the drainer bit of the sink

dementedpixie, I would, DH is unlikely to. We both think air drying is more hygienic.

Leave the dishwasher open until they have air dried? It even has a built in drying rack, pre-loaded!

We just pile the plastic stuff up on the drainer. Crockery, glasses and utensils dry just fine.

Rollercoaster , thanks but small and awkwardly shaped items tend to hold puddles which would never dry if we didn't tip the water out of them. Then they go on the draining rack to finish air-drying so that the dishwasher can be re-filled.

I have oak worktops so need a tray/spout, but after years getting annoyed with slime puddles on the swanky ones with trays and spouts, I invested in a ceramic draining board and can just use a basic draining rack and it is so much better. So, my advice is ignore the bells and whistles racks and just get a basic airy one. I've got this one now, the plate rack folds down so you can drain a large pan or whatever too:

This is the one I've got. It's the oxo good grips dish rack. The wee spikes are
great for positioning things to let them drip dry. There's no spout so you just tip the water out. It's neat enough to store away and just gets bunged in the dishwasher to clean.

We've got a wire one from John Lewis. Black, to match black granite worktops, but I think they do various colours and sizes too. It's very neat and discreet, coated so doesn't rust, and has no drip tray underneath (we have grooves carved into the granite instead). I've had it a few years and have been pleased with it.

I’ve got a Simple Human one. It’s 7 years old and hasn’t rusted. It has a wire frame and a rigid plastic insert with drainage spout.

If you don’t want a rack you could get an absorbent dish drying mat that can be folded away.

I have one for overspill and it’s very effective
