Given that my machine only goes up to 95. Surely you don't stick socks or whatever in a saucepan and boil them on the hob????

This has been puzzling me for some time. Note to self - get out more.

That's the term for the 90/95 degree wash

Yes 95 is the boil wash...but I have indeed been known to intermittently boil my dishcloths and flanels on the hob. Tis actually very effective..

Thank you smile. Now - where is that saucepan.....

yep, that is a boil wash.
My mum does her dishclothes in a pan on the hob. works quite well

My mum boiled our flannels until they were whimpering for mercy

Actually can be interesting to see what actually comes out of your dishcloths as you take them out of washing machine....

PS> Don't let the pan boil dry wink

I'm using real nappies on DS2 and I've taken to hanging out the washing instead of using the tumble drier - doing a boil wash seemed the next step, really, only I wasn't sure what it entailed.
I forsee many happy evenings at the hob, stirring pants. grin

Now, I must dash - that nice Mr Chamberlain is on the radio, and I've some jelly to make out of a calf's foot.

surely in 2007 its not really necessary to wash above 60C though....

(unless someone in your family is suffering from an unusual illness)

When on cruise ships, even stuff with norovirus on (ie vomit on, or having been worn / used by people with expected NV it is taken to a machine that washes at 75C)

I cant see why normal healthy person would need to wash anything above 60.... which kills bacteria and dustmites

nannyl I used to do the occasional boil wash on nappies when they got a bit smelly.
aside from that everything in my house goes in on 30
