Fledglings in Flaming June! The June 2020 Flylady thread

Welcome to June 2020! The summer is upon us, even if we're experiencing it in a Socially Distanced way and CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) is government mandated, rather than a function of lack of housekeeping!

Thanks, Lisette for a brilliant 2-thread May with lots of chat and interesting questions.
We operate a No Fledgling Left Behind policy and indeed Flylady herself stresses that you are never behind in the system – no need to deep clean the house first, just jump right in. Your home didn't get dusty and cluttered in a day, and it won't get clean in a day either! We come from lots of different backgrounds and have lots of different family situations, but are bound together by the fact that housekeeping doesn't always come naturally to us, and life often gets in the way! I'm Jig, or Meg, or sometimes Willow (old name) and I have 4 DC, a DH, a Megahound who is a yappy pillock and more housework than I can reliably focus on! I've been Flying on and off for 17 years in August, and still need this thread to keep me on the straight and narrow.

All are welcome here from longtimers to newbies and those lurking – we all follow this zone-based Flylady cleaning system:
There are 5 zones to focus on for decluttering and deep cleaning, and you can adjust them to suit your own space - I replace the dining room with the study, and the "other room" with the music / playroom.

Zone 1 Hall, entrance/dining room
Zone 2 Kitchen
Zone 3 Bathroom and another room
Zone 4 Master bedroom/closet
Zone 5 Living room

I'll put the dates in once I have them, but for now we are definitely in Zone 1 (cos Lisette says so!)

Pop onto the Flylady website to have a closer look here but be aware that lots of emails arrive if you sign up. There have been concerns about site safety in the past, so please be careful if you are going to download any of her paperwork.

Flylady has an introductory scheme called Babysteps which is a light 31 day introduction to the system – dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc here .

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean then stop!
In addition each day has a purpose: the daily focus here

Monday: Weekly "home blessing" (home bleugh!) hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week). She's a bit over-confident about how much you can do in an hour including changing beds, but look here
Tuesday: Plan and play (Menu planning, family event planning)
Wednesday: Anti-procrastination day
Thursday: Errand day incl. grocery shopping
Friday: Clear out bags, fill car with petrol, date night
Saturday: Family fun
Sunday: Lift your spirit

Launch pad for guidance every day! launch pad

Habit of the month for June is drinking your water – Flylady would like to sell you a water bottle with her picture on grin but any water container will do!

We have the Naughty Corner, a space to avoid housework when it all gets too much, which offers seasonally appropriate snacks and comforts, and a (round ended) pointy stick if your motivation has left the building. We also lend Ned and Ted to assist with any Laundry Mountains.

In late March, SC invented the Keep Calm Corner (KCC) to stop lockdown stressing us all out, and what a triumph it's been! This gives us something to muse upon / chat about / laugh at daily and has been run with aplomb by SC herself, Lane and Lisette so far. I hope I can carry the baton along for another month!

So welcome to the new thread and let's get cracking... tomorrow!

I'm sure you'll be fine Meg and thank you flowers

KTCluck Sun 31-May-20 23:08:53

Just posted on the May thread, but I’m checking in bright eyes and bushy tailed ready to fly through June.

Thanks for the new thread meg / jig (do you have a preference?) and I’m amazed at your 17 years of flying (I’ve done 3).

Thanks again Lisette for a cracking May thread.

Lisette1940 Sun 31-May-20 23:15:26

Many thanks KT and Meg. I'm thrilled everyone thought it went well.

Stirring into Meg - I'm fired up for tomorrow. I think I entered zone one too early - oops.

I'm feeling better and have had a medicinal scotch. House is tidyish. It's officially summer tomorrow!

Lisette1940 Sun 31-May-20 23:23:38

ACH, I lost the post thanking Meg and congratulating her on the inspiring start to June. I'm looking forward to her posts.

Bowerbird5 Mon 01-Jun-20 00:33:30

Thank you Lisette for organising May I really enjoyed and think we got to know each other a bit more.

Thank you Willow Meg for stepping up.

I’m certainly not bright eyed or bushy tailed.
I am looking forward to starting the hall as for once there is a parent numerous card

Howl love the hen news.
I had four battery hens and all demised except one. I tried locally to get some more but it didn’t happen until a chance meeting during my exercise during lock down. I got one then a couple of weeks later two more hens from a local farmer who had too many. I ended up with three little black bantams as he chose them. Then my hen was off her food but looking beautiful and then sadly died the next day.
I called them Gladys and the pips so now it is Gladys, Persephone and I am still choosing the other ones name with a P. Possibly Lady Penelope or Persimmon as I am reading a book series and that is the name of the main character.
I also have my daughter’s cat while she is away travelling. Staying in NZ longer than planned due to lock down. She is on an organic farm just now. I have four children she is my youngest and three DS all fully grown. DD has a partner of ten years too.
Right I must get to sleep in anticipation of the builder turning up.

Signing in!

Thank you meg and lisette for threads star

Lisette1940 Mon 01-Jun-20 06:24:36

Morning that. I think this June is going to be hot, as Megiddo observed in her thread title. Full on here today.

🧡 printed dcs school work for the day

JigoloHarMegiddo Mon 01-Jun-20 06:41:07

Morning! I am leaving 🥐🥨🥯🥓🥚🧇🥞🍓🍑☕ and brew in the Naughty Corner so we can start the month with a good nutritious breakfast (don't expect this level of service every day!).

Here is the launch pad for today - we are in Zone 1 until next Sunday, so the hall / porch / dining room will get an unusually thorough going-over this month! Don't forget, if you're not in a position to clean the Zone yet, that aim is to declutter for 15 minutes a day until you can clean. This may well take several months, don't panic!

I also thought it might be useful to go back to basics and remind ourselves what Flylady's Morning Routine looks like. I know I tend to try to overcomplicate mine, but actually it's best to Keep It Simple! She suggests:
🍍 Get dressed to shoes including hair/face and brush teeth
🍍 Make your bed
🍍 Swish and swipe your bathroom(s)
🍍 Empty the dishwasher
🍍 Load of Laundry on
🍍 Check your calendar and Control Journal
🍍 What's for dinner?

My day runs more smoothly if I get things done before I get launched into children/ work/ online stuff etc. Although I would add Eat Breakfast in there as none of us function without sustenance!

Keep Calm Corner - today I'm thinking about how I got into Flying. 17 years ago in August, we went away for the weekend with our two tinys DSs (aged 2, and 5 months). It was hottest weekend the UK had seen for decades and somehow the fridge door got left ajar. My FIL was keeping an eye on the house and saw the door wasn't properly shut but refused to go into the kitchen because it wasn't tidy 🤬. We came home to a foul stench and I vowed never to be put in that position again, and spent some time on the internet googling "how to housework" and other such things. FLylady seemed to offer a system that could be flexed around endless nappy changes and naps!

I wouldn't say I've flown consistently since, but it's always been there at the back of my mind, and it's what I always return to. It's flexed around two more DC, a house move, a dog, DH starting to work from home all the time, me running my own business and DD and DS3 being educated at home.

So, what is your Flying story?

OP’s posts: |
THATscurryfungeBITCH Mon 01-Jun-20 07:06:18

I am actually going to try following some of fly ladies routines and things this month (although i have said this before) i normally just come on for the chat and post my random lists. i confess i often have no idea what the zone should be because i skim that bit blush

So yeah. The hall could do with a once over i will do that today.

My flying story (i think) is that i used to use a different thread on here (unfuck your house) but it kind of died. I stumbled across this thread and realised it wasn't as twee as fly lady sounds. So i stuck around grin at the time i think i had 3 dc (3, 6 and 7ish) now i have five grin We have moved into a house twice the size of where we were back then but the shit has literally grown to fill the space confused I had such good intentions too!

So this morning routine thing .... i can't make my bed as dp is still in it, and i don't own a dishwasher or a calendar or a control journal ..... 🤣 i don't want to get dressed as i will have a bath soon once the baby is napping, and i'll s+s the bathrooms post bath, not sure what is for dinner until Tesco appear with the food shop - look at that i just made up an excuse for almost the entire morning routine!

<wanders off to put on the washing machine>

JigoloHarMegiddo Mon 01-Jun-20 07:09:51

And now, the personals (I needed coffee before I could get my head around this bit!)

Firstly, 🍒🙋‍♀️ to all our frontline NHS staff, particularly including Stressy who has had to step back from the thread for a bit, but might be reading. Hope all is well.

KT, brilliant list there on the end of the May thread. Hope your DD enjoys going back to nursery and getting some of her normal life back. Good luck to anyone who is sending DC back to an educational setting today or in the coming weeks - remember any decision to send them is for your family, and your family alone. No-one else's opinion actually matters.

Bower cross fingers the builder can some things done today! and sending 💖 to DCat, Gladys and the Pips.

That, good start with the work printing. Hope baby DS didn't have you up too revoltingly early. They all sound like excellent reasons not to have done the morning routine yet. This has to be flexible!

Lisette, I trust you're enjoying a well-earned lie in after leading the thread. Today's interesting factoid is that on 1 June 1495, Friar John Cor recorded the first known batch of Scotch whisky!

"Rabbits!" to ED, Chic, AWOL, Howl, Foxes, Lane, Cineraria, Hazel,Dancing, Zoo, SC, Fluff, Averytiredmom, Shannara and Icy - cross fingers for a good month! And 👋 to any lurkers who might be thinking of dipping a toe in the water - we're very friendly, I promise!

No Ta Das yet this morning, except
💖 got the Flylady thread posts up 😂
🧡 drank coffee!

To dos for today:
💥 Set up June diary / weekly planning in my bullet journal
💥 Hang yesterday's last wash out
💥 more LOL. Always more LOL!
💥 Measure DS3, who is determined to be taller grin
💥 ring specialist Autism teacher to see if she can point us to a dyspraxia maths specialist for DS3
💥 email the OT
💥 pay the OT
💥 pay the milk bill
💥 do hoovering bit of home bleugh if someone else takes Megahound out ( he does not love the hoover and tries to bite it to protect me from the noise)
💥 wake DS2 just before 10 and get him to check the school email and put tasks in his new diary system, with reminders
💥 Skype call with friend at 10am too
💥 Make a second set of bunting for the garden
💥 Dinner tonight is salmon or fishfingers because I planned the menu for the whole week and know where everything is <twirls with pride>
💥 Do Zone 1 task of hallway decluttering and finish the time in the study if necessary.

Last week one of you, I think it was KT, asked about my orange cake recipe. I'm ashamed to say it was straight from a packet, but there's a picture attached! You only need to add oil and water, then slam it in a tin. The recipe is also specified so you can make 1 round cake or 1 loaf or 1 tray bake or 12 muffins or 24 cupcakes etc. I'm going to send a couple of packets back to Uni with DS1 when he goes, because I know he misses cake but never has the time / ingredients to bake.

I've also included a picture of my new garden bunting, because I am inordinately proud of it!

OP’s posts: |
THATscurryfungeBITCH Mon 01-Jun-20 07:30:47

Oh your garden looks pretty meg i am envy envious! Ours is small and yard like. I need to do something with it

JigoloHarMegiddo Mon 01-Jun-20 07:36:12

You should see the "before" pictures, That! It's taken us 15 years to make it look like it does (covered in wild geraniums and in need of a mow except where DS3 has worn the grass out twiring about?). When we moved in, it was a blighted triangle of nettles and brambles about 1.5m in all directions, the rest was self-seeded trees, car parts and elderly rockeries. But I'm a very strong believer in pretty things making a nice outside space, even if other people think they're twee. I love our pots on the fence, and I'm hoping to get bunting all the way round a string at a time, even if FIL does mutter about "municipal planting"!

Hi all! Thanks again lisette for getting us through May with a lovely entertaining thread 💕💐

Meg thanks for taking on June - love the opening post especially “yappy pillock” 🐶 and the idea of government mandated CHAOS grin

What a great KCC question. And I am disgusted at your FIL’s actions 17 years ago (although given things you’ve mentioned about him before, not entirely surprised 🤬) - that must have been utterly awful to deal with, both the insult and the hassle.

I’m not actually sure what led me to join, or when I did! It must have been at least 6 years ago though, unless I’m getting confused with another long running thread (Frugaleers) - I remember posting about the decision to take the Caglets out of school on there, which was February 2015, so I must have been there a while before that, and I’m sure I did the same on the Flylady thread too. I don’t know how I discovered the thread, probably recommended on an AIBU thread or something?! As I’d not heard of the website before. I don’t think it was brought on by a particular incident, rather the general “ugh I’m so shit at housework” feeling. I’ve never consistently managed to follow the system but now my recently-discovered ADHD is medicated I’m actually starting to get stuff done and even build up my own routines a bit, although lockdown somewhat messed with that because everything changed! But I’ve decided to start Future Friend again, just a bit altered to recognise the fact there’s no nursery.

Right I need to get up and weigh myself <existential dread creeps in> and have breakfast, see off DD1 (leaves at 8) and write today’s home ed aims on the board (this will be one of the future friend items).

Finishing off my waffly post with a TO DO - much as I’d love to do all this today, that’s a frankly laughable idea, so it’s more a “next few days” type thing - TBH even that is probably overly ambitious when we are also trying to do actual home ed/keep up with school <sigh>

😱find printable stuff for rivers/flooding as a minimum
😱choose and print extra activities for Kensuke’s Kingdom, delete the rest
😱put several loads of laundry away
😱go through Cagletini’s clothes and put aside anything too small (or what will be too small by the time we get to autumn)
😱food inventory
😱edit Tesco order for Tuesday, using said inventory
😱try my Workout B
😱read a few chapters book club book (it’s teen fiction, they are short!)
😱find a couple of printed things that we’ve lost
😱gather all communal pens/pencils into a spare toolbox
😱go through the BRCs we made from the living room the other day and sort the easy stuff that can be put away or thrown away
😱choose and order birthday presents for DD1
😱look through her google classrooms again and find anything that needs to be done/handed in etc
😱pay for tap class
😱look through extra curricular club activities for the Caglets
😱put some things in the diary
😱check Alexa/phone alarms to remind us of online commitments

I’d best stop there! Have a great start to the month everyone.

foxessocks Mon 01-Jun-20 08:07:48

Thanks Lisette and meg!!

I was pregnant with dc2 when I came across the flylady threads, I think I'd been searching for some sort of routine that would help me as I was about to have a toddler and a baby. I think I stuck around mostly because everyone here was so friendly! Ds is now nearly 4! I drop on and off the flylady wagon but always enjoy the chat smile

I must get up, full day of work and home school here , argh ...

LaneBoy Mon 01-Jun-20 08:23:56

Bugger. Also have to

😱finally make the trail mix I’ve bought the stuff for, as I had to open some of the packets today, but DD1 informs me she no longer likes most of the stuff 🙄 guess it’ll just be for me then
😱clean tuff tray properly

So far this morning we’ve had to scrabble around the kitchen for stuff for DD1 (neither she nor DH thought to get packed lunch things when in Sainsbury’s 🙄) and I dug out a lentil stew from the freezer. We also got a Mystery Bag out - I think it’s a bechamel?!

ExpletiveDelighted Mon 01-Jun-20 08:37:42

Morning all,

I've just been out for a little jog to the nearest village and back (probably only about 1.5 mile in total and fairly level). It's nice in the morning, plenty of shade and a cool breeze.

Now sitting in the garden pondering. Your bunting is pretty Meg. Our garden is fairly "au naturelle", the only colour is from plants but I like it that way. It's a bit untidy today as we tend to use it as a workspace in summer, there are tools on the lawn where DH and DS are chopping logs, some stuff from the dining room because DH cleaned the carpet yesterday. There is a cat accessorising the patio step ATM.

I've been on this thread since 2009. Unbelievably. Made many friends along the way. I got made redundant in 2009 and started browsing MN, kept seeing threads about something called Flylady, got curious and the rest is history.

Right, must go and shower and change, work this morning.

LaneBoy Mon 01-Jun-20 08:52:45

I was going to suggest Pomegranate for one of the Pips bower but maybe not if you also have Persephone grin

Just realised we can’t start person of the week today (only 3 sheets so that is fine) as we’ve not chosen anyone yet. In the past we’d just pick someone for him to research online but we are trying to get back to books instead as it’s easier for him, but with no access to the library we need to make sure we choose people that feature enough in DS-level books we already have! Although we have a free subscription to Q-files (online junior encyclopaedia offering membership in lockdown - worth a look) so will use that too.

So the rapidly increasing 🙄 list now has:
😱have a browse to choose six more people for PotW
😱move books and games round on living room shelves - not really organising them (other than taking out more home ed stuff separately) but so they are more efficiently stacked at least
😱move at least some of the books back in from the hallway
😱clear off dining table hotspot as nod to zone work (even though it’s in the living room)
😱clear off “phone shelf” as nod to entrance zone
😱draw more of my picture quiz to force myself to relax!
😱get outside at some point in the next few days 🙄

As for now, I need to get Cagletini sorted, choose DS’ maths (I used to staple them into 10-sheet books for each week but I’ve realised we need more freedom so I’m just putting them in a folder), gather his stuff for the morning (starts work around 9) and then I really should go upstairs to do my workout and then shower.

LaneBoy Mon 01-Jun-20 08:54:29

Loving the photos!
Meg if you find any info about a maths teacher who would work well with DS I’d very much appreciate the info for DD1 please 💐

Right I really must move!

Stilllivinginazoo Mon 01-Jun-20 08:58:41

I got into flylady by chance.was an active thread and I decided see what it was.back then there was dedicated flyers tadas and the fledglings group.when I joined that it was run mainly by carrotsandcelery and Bessiecat.<at this point lil zoo was still in nappies>.both super friendly and there was lots recipe sharing etc along the way.thread died after Bessie returned to work and carrots started a jewellery making business..I sidles back in lord knows how long ago and made it my home.everyones kind and supportive and that's a big thing for someone without family or particularly friends to have somewhere to share trials and triumphs as well be sometimes motivated to clean up!

It's all kicked off here with dd2 last night.spiteful ex bf and her cronies bombarding her hateful shite.she wouldn't block them and just said her piece calmly which just enflamed them to be more personally vengeful and she then retreated to just liking posts....very upset and this morning's in vilest of in for a fun day.ive banned her from phone and computer for the day.shes stormed off upstairs.<someone give me something to fortify my nerves PLEASE>

Fed cats
Wash on<towels>
Wash up
Wipe surfaces
Clean cupboard fronts
Sweep floor

Living room
Locate dining and little table <rubbish to bin/recycling and things stacked in owners rooms>and wiped
Swept floor
Walked nearest co op with D's and lil zoo<left dd2 sleeping a bit longer>a 25 mins walk in search more bread n milk<and may have acquired a fruit loaf>
Wiped shop
Fed zoolets
Woke dd2<in full riot gear.yes,it was needed>
Made fruit loaf toast and vitalite for us both --we may eaten whole damn thing-->
She now stormed upstairs
DS hiding upstairs hoping I've forgotten it's a school day/avoiding schoolwork

I was up til gone midnight with dd2,have had less 3hours ready kill or collapse, can't decide which I have energy to do as brains do foggy/dead.its going to be a very very long trying one today

<Wanders off to check state of zoolets rooms>

LaneBoy Mon 01-Jun-20 09:01:28

Cagletini dressed.

Also remembered:
😱plan future friend list for lockdown, print out and start following it

I’ll stop my multiple posting now, the list is long enough already. PLEASE tell me to bugger off and wave the pointy stick at me if you see me here again before lunchtime 😂🙄😳 I will relax and catch up with the thread while having my stew.

Lisette1940 Mon 01-Jun-20 10:40:50

That's a lovely start to the thread Megiddo!! I'm ensconced on the computer rather than the app which I found impossible to post from.

I too am pissed off at your FIL. Some DIL's do 'ave 'em. Who wouldn't slip in and shut an open fridge door? It's virtually reflexive. Numpty.

No shame about the orange cake mix - everybody fed, nobody dead is the MN motto.

KCC I think I got into Flylady through Diane in Denmark who is a Scottish blogger who lives in Copenhagen. She seems really lovely and I love watching her about her house and hearing about her daily winterbathing.

Anyway I now have the Flylady book which isn't necessary at all but I find it useful. Yes it's a bit twee but there are useful bits.

I did have a lie in this morning Meggido but I do feel better today. I think a whole day without exercise yesterday has helped. I'm back to running tomorrow.

zoo your poor dd and the bullies. Here is a tot of whisky gin

Studycast Mon 01-Jun-20 12:14:59

Good morning all!
[SC here]
Whoo-hoo to a shiny new thread! grin
And happy "summer time" everyone!

Thank you so much for taking on June Megiddo; really REALLY good of you when you are pulled in so many directions, and arf at "yappy pillock" grin - I think our furries would definitely get on! grin grin
[Wheels in sustaining supplies for month ahead >>>>>>>cake biscuit gin ]

[From yesterday] I so agree with you about holiday packing!

And thank you again Lisette for the May thread which kept us all interested, calm AND motivated! I meant to say earlier that I really loved yesterday's memes; they really made me cackle! (Particularly the bathing-suit stripe which is rather close to the bone currently grin grin grin) And sorry, I missed that you were unwell yesterday, but glad you are feeling better today flowers Good luck with your busy day!

Sorry I am a bit late to the party. I wrote half a post and then had a two-hour Zoom call yesterday which was more work than play related (a trial lecture by someone else) and I felt most peculiar afterwards. Very tired and like I had motion sickness. It was really odd. [Does anyone else get this or is it just me?] Anyway, the rest of my post didn't get written. Back on form this morning though thankfully!

First, just wanted to shout out to Toostressy too! Your presence is very much missed flowers But we hope you are ok x

Gosh I have been on here so long I almost can't remember my Flying story but basically me, and PA (an ex long-standing Fledgling] and Expletive and other long-timers bonded over Flylady many, many moons ago [Expletive I'll have to look up those 2009 threads!!] and established this very long-running thread together.

Like That I was put off initially by the barftastically twee language of Flylady, but so far it is the best house-cleaning system I have found. (Although ironically I am finding that TOMM works a bit better for me under lockdown conditions when I have no help.) You'd think being on this thread so long would mean that I had a wonderfully clean and decluttered house but for a number of ongoing and intractable reasons ... that isn't the case sadly. But we carry on! smile And it's really crunch time now as this house has to be decluttered by yours truly in the next year (ish] in order to be either renovated/rented/sold before we move to the countryside.
[Eeek. Wibble.]

Expletive A very happy anniversary to you and your dh flowers [champagne] I hope you have a lovely celebration together! (Maybe a Greek salad with some nice rosé? wink ) Great to see your furry rockery accessory too smile And yes, how could I forget about the barbecue sausage! Couldn't agree more!

Great list yesterday Lane star star Good luck with the rest of the photocopying! I am with you in spirit because the local authority offices have opened up again here so I can get back to working on my nationality dossier again, which inevitably involves multiple copies.

Fluffiest it is very poor manners indeed to leave rubbish behind anywhere, especially on someone elses's property. [And really awful to leave litter on a beach too KTKluck.]

Howl I love the caravan decor! Are you sure you are not called Angel, kimono-wearing chatelain of a French chateau? wink

Zoo I hope your dd1's fiancé is ok! Sorry that your dd2 is so upset too. I hope the break from sm will help her to feel a bit better. Lockdown is hard enough for teens as it is! [Proffers cup of camomile tea and a nourishing oat and raisin cookie for you to keep your strength up.] And snap, I have been gathering in ingreds to make more malt loaf at some point (lots of B12 for dd!).

Bower I really feel for you without a shower... especially in this hot weather ... you have been v patient already with ongoing building work. On the positive side: whoo hoo to two new large stores of you know where opening near you!

Megiddo Congrats on menu planning star and your bunting and garden looks really fab!

Mahoosive waves to everyone I've missed!

BBL with ta da/to do/ta da grin

Oh yes ... barbecues ... meant to say ... it's not the potential food poisoning aspect that puts me off so much (although one has to watch that, especially when catering for a crowd) it's more the fact that ime you have to designate one person to stand their and look after it continually who (a) doesn't get too drunk or (b) wander off and socialise ... invariably, one of the two happens and you end up with charred meat reminiscent of a body part from the Tollund man grin grin

Hope you all have a very productive start to the month Fledglings!
