Weighted blankets

Does anyone have one of these? Passing through living room earlier, TV on, not sure if it was a film or just a programme but I heard one of the females asking her friend if the weighted blanket was making a difference - reply was that it was a godsend and she was grateful her doctor recommended it! I'd never heard of them and just did a search on Amazon and they seem quite expensive. Not really sure what they're supposed to do to make them a godsend?

Would folding a SK duvet in half create the same thing in principle or is that totally daft idea? Grin

I'm interested in these too. I believe they have to be a particular weight compared to your own?

I believe they were designed for autistic children to help them to sleep. A non-autistic, adult friend has recently got one, and loves it.

My parents still use sheets and blankets, and I love the cocoon feeling you get when under the blankets. Sometimes duvets just don’t cut the mustard.

I bought one of these for my daughter last week to help with her eds and it seems to be working great so far. A friend made one for her son last year but dd found a couple around the £40 mark which is still more than the materials but not by that much -and my sewing skills leave something to be desired-

Here’s a tutorial. I haven’t watched it recently, but IIRC the blanket is stitched into sections and then you pour the correct amount of plastic beads into each compartment according to the person’s weight.

It does say “easy”, though...

They’re great. It’s like that heavy, tucked in feeling you used to get from beds made the old fashioned way with blankets and hospital corners and bedspreads. Very secure and relaxing sensation.

I bought one for my DC who has ASC, and pretty soon after got one myself.

I have a koala blanket and love it - if I'm feeling stressed or anxious it really helps. Also I am sleeping terribly and if I wake up at 3am it is the only thing that helps me go back to sleep

I have one. I use it when I’m feeling that psychological ‘chilly’ feeling when you feel a bit scared and unrooted. It grounds me. I couldn’t use it all night though.

Embarrassingly, I’m in my late 50s.

I have one (ASD sand EDS) and it's terrific. I sleep better and I definitely feel calmer.

My daughter has one as she is very anxious right now and wasn't sleeping. It's definitely helped

I have one, it reminds me of having heavy blankets as a child, it's very comforting and I seem to get less night sweats than I did with my thicker (winter weight) duvet. Folding a duvet wouldn't be the same because you'd get really hot, the weighted blanket doesn't have the heat retention of a duvet - my current set up is a thin duvet with weighted blanket on top, though I may have to rethink the duvet element as we get into warmer weather.

I have one from Snuzi. There's a guide of what weight to buy for your own weight. I definitely sleep better using it.

Absolutely love mine. I finally sleep more than 3 hours per night. Mine is made by Gravity Blankets.
There were cheaper ones but they were the only company where I could pay it off over 12 months. I couldn't have afforded one otherwise.

I’ve just watched the video.
The blanket should weigh 10% or less of the person’s body weight.
Wow that’s a lot!

Children don't weigh much @Sgtmajormummy! My 11yo is only 26kg, so a blanket for him would only be 2kg or so (pretty much any wool blanket).

Are these really hot ? I would love one to help with indomnia but I sweat loads in bed so am reluctant to buy one ... can anyone recommend one that's not too warm please x

I’ve got a gravity one so at the more expensive end. I’m also pretty heavy so needed a higher weighted one. I used to wake up a few times a night but with my blanket I sleep through. I love it.

@Jultay mine came with a 'Summer" cover which is cotton on one side and fleece (it's not fleece but I can't remember what it is) on the other
The cotton side is lovely and cool. I've never been too hot. It's got glass micro beads in. I think some of the others are plastic. Don't know if that makes a difference.

Mines so heavy I can hardly lift it, but don't notice it once its over me. Changing the cover is a pain because it's heavy so I hardly ever bother

Is it ok to ask for recommendations on here?
There are so many available I don't know where to start.

I got mine off amazon. SCM weighted blanket with 2 covers
It's cheaper now than when I got mine. I bought for SN teen who refused to try it so I started using it. I love it.
