Washing school cardies - views please

Sad, I know...
Well off they went a couple of hours ago looking immaculate. But those cardies will need washing.
Grateful for any views/tricks on how to keep the cardies and jumpers in good condition. It didn't seem to matter what I did last year I ended up with draping necks, ten-foot-long sleeves and flappy bottoms.
I'm a failure, I know. Think I'll have another figroll to console myself.

LOl.I have the same problem. Am saving DS1's old jumper for year 6, it is sooo stretched - he's just gone into Year 1 today wearing DS2's brand new jumper a size smaller than his own.

Think maybe to not use conditioner, not tumble dry and issue instructions that jumpers are not to be usd as tents, reins, weapons etc.

Colours will probably fade less if you wash them in non-bio detergent or colour version of Bio deterg.

I will try not using a softener. I can see this might help. Just a quick machine wash with a little detergent. Low spin you think?
What about ironing? Up to now I have just 'pressed', not moved the iron about. The lady in the uniform shop says don't iron them but mine always seem crinkly.
