What are your 'hygiene horrors' - slightly irrational things that just send you insane?

I have realised today that two of mine are:

  • putting 'outside things' on the kitchen table e.g. DH comes in with the picnic bag we've had sitting on a field (of cow dung, for all I know) today and plonks it straight on the kitchen table - drives me mad! I always put it on the floor or a chair.

Similarly, having suitcases on the bed. I just think of all the places those suitcases have been, all the dust, dirt etc and I don't want to think of it going on my nice clean bedspread. (This could be related to an incident with an early boyfriend of mine, when he put my suitcase down on the pavement in a pile of dog poo? )

  • newspapers on the sofa. If you looks at how much newsprint comes off on your fingers and then imagine it rubbing off on the sofa, and then your clothes....

My DH just things I'm loopy, but these things REALLY annoy me!

    Anyone equally mad?

Friends telling me that it's okay to pet animals at a zoo then "wash" your hands with that anti-bac gel. I know it's probably fine but I want soap and hot water then anti-bac gel. They've been stroking goats and camels FFS. yuckahoola.

Touching pets or (god forbid) being licked by them and not immediately washing your hands.
I know that for someone who owns a pet this is highly impractical and therefore probably irrational on my part, it really bothers me though.

I know someone who used to let their dog lick out all the saucepans and cooking dishes after they had dished up but before they washed up.

I never went there to eat

Stray errant hairs where hairs ought not to be. A small hair in the margarine will usually make me chiuck the whole lot out, but even finding hairs in books (or in my Times which has happened twice of late) makes my teeth go all twitchy.

Not washing hands after loo, touching raw meat etc.

Public loos in general. (In France we had to stand in wee a cm deep all over floor...then we all get in car...with shoes on...and no hand washing facilities) Ewwww!

And on Mooncup thread, apparantly some put it in the DISHWASHER to clean it!! I'm sorry, but that is so gross!

Cats eating,or just being on the benches.

Flushing the toilet without putting the lid down first.

ANYTHING other than food(and of course cutlery, plates etc)being put on the kitchen table.

Loo brushes.

Bars of soap-must be liquid, especially in the bathroom.

I recently found out - after 7 years of marriage - that DH regularly uses the dishcloth, or the teatowel, to wipe up spills from the floor or on the bin lid....

He doesn't do this anymore

I'm a bit obsessive about raw meat.

It goes into the bottom drawer of teh fridge (seperate from any other food) and I wash my hands thoroughly and any items/sides etc are scrubbed if they might have come into contact with it. SInk and taps are cleaned with antibacterial stuff after I have washed my hands.

I use seperate knives and other equipment with it when cooking and always put it on plate not chopping board (plates are easier to clean thoroughly).

I hate people taking risks with raw meat. Luckily dp and lodger are same as me.

I have that advert stuck in my head - the one where they show all the things the raw meat has touched.

NOt sure it's exactly irrational though.

And I woudn't put hairbrushes on a table - that's somethign my mum is insistent on.

And I could not put my mooncup in the dishwasher.

NOt if I wanted to use my plates/pans/cutlery etc again.

Logically I know it would be fine, but I'd know when I was using stuff that it would hav ebeen done.

Peopl putting handbags on the toilet floor on a night/meal out and then putting them on the side in the kitchen.

Bleaurgh. Just think what would be on the bottom of them,

There are a reason for hooks on the back of public toilet doors ladies - use them!

I've got a thing about floors. I especially hate carpets with inground bits stuck on them. It is totally irrational, i could have walls six foot deep in horse muck and barely notice, but if there was a BIT on my carpet I would have to hoover it up right then and there.

I am fairly careful with raw meat & stuff but don't go mad about it.

Just fluffy bits on carpets

Agree with you re skirting boards - I get through packs and packs of wet wipes as I'm always grabbing one to wipe a mark from the skirting board but then end up doing the whole room

Always liquid soap and loathe bags on my kitchen worksurfaces.

Wilkie - ooh yes, I'm SOOOOO with you on the bags on the floor in public loos - bleurgh!

If there isn't a hook, I hang it round my neck and then squat over the loo with a kind of albatross around my neck
