Should we rent or buy a carpet cleaner? And which one?

My PIL have bought a property with fairly dirty - but lovely - carpets. We'd like to give them a good clean, but I don't know whether to hire a carpet cleaner from the supermarket or to buy one they can reuse. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations please?

We've rented Rug Doctor machines a few times and they're great- they made an amazing difference to the grotty carpets in the last house we bought. I'd use generic carpet shampoo rather than the special Rug Doctor stuff though- we've used both and the results are equally good but the generic carpet shampoo is so much cheaper. Buy lots, you'll get through loads of it if the carpets are particularly grotty. I've bought the shampoo for a couple of quid in Home Bargains and Ocado, but I'm sure all the supermarkets will stock it.

We've hired one for a week from HSS and got 5 litres of carpet cleaner from screwfix for less than a weekend's rental from the supermarket.

I’ve had the rug doctor a few times. Friend and mother agreed date and we battered through all three houses in 24 hours. They are great. I’ve got my own vax one for occasional cleaning but I’d suggest the professional one for what you need. Mind and be careful if the carpets are wool. Don’t over soak. Get the heating on. I did find the rug doctor one left the carpets fractionally dryer than my vax one, but not by much. I think you get heated ones nowadays.

We had a local professional carpet cleaner, he cleaned my 3 bedroom house including the hall stairs & landing for £150. The carpets were almost dry after he’d finished, they looked like new. I wouldn’t want the bother of doing it myself & storing the machine.

I would for the first time get a professional carpet cleaner in and maintain with a hired machine
