Double whammy question: rodents plus house move

DonJeer · 15/07/2019 10:30

We are about to move house and know the previous occupants. They've told us that there is an ongoing rat and mouse issue (just outside the house) which is being dealt with. Mice have made it into the house before though.
Can anyone please advise me on how to rodent proof the home before, during and after the move?
We will have access to the empty house before moving day so that gives me time to lay down any special items (sealing cupboards?) or something... Im also looking into storing food in (glass?) jars so any advice there would be great too (good brands to look for etc)

two questions:

  • how is the problem being dealt with at the moment? (rats much more worrying than mice, I would want professionals involved)
  • where are mice coming in?- find that and block with wire wool

Yes there are professionals involved thankfully which helps a bit but we are near a river which may not help? Not sure where the mice are coming in - there is a bssement and I think they were in there. Its a old building.
Im wondering what preventative messures I can take. The wire wool is a good tip haven't heard of that.

Call a reputable pest control company and as for a full pest survey (sometimes called field biology reports). They will identify any potential ingress points. Then you can fill them all up! But be aware if you fill up their ingress holes they also can't get out of there are any inside so you'll need to treat for that too.

I found the sonic plug-ins worked well for stopping field mice coming into the mouse. Also, keep the grass around the house mowed very short.

Worth paying for a professional company to track where they are entering and deal with the problem and block all potential holes.

Agree with the professional company! They can do a maintenance check once a month. It's not too expensive either! Rats will chew through metal to get into you're property! Wee horrors!

When people say block any holes, the pest controller told us that mice can get in holes the size of a pen (thickness wise) and rats the size of your thumb 🤪
