Housekeeping

Becoming more organised and efficient

With DC3 due soon I’m looking to get more organised and hopefully efficient around the house.

Does anyone have a cleaning routine or schedule that works? Or anything really that makes you more efficient.

I’m hoping to write it up so I can follow it until it becomes second nature.

So far I have worked out what days I’ll do specific washing loads! I just want to feel not so overwhelmed by the cleaning, washing etc. when I’ve got three little ones to look after.

DH is great and has said he’ll put the washing in at night on the timer and make sure it’s dry or at least in the tumble dryer / on the line by the time he leaves for work and he will sort the dishwasher at night and empty it first thing.

No, but I'd like a list of how often to do things.

The key is to have a system where you do a little bit every day and then there's (hopefully) never a huge buildup. Have a look at the Organised Mum method - there's threads on here or you could google and find her website. There are checklists to print off if that's your thing. Good luck!

Organised Mum method is great, although I don't stick to it religiously, I always make sure I clean bath after its been used, clean the toilet before bed every night, do the washing up every morning & wipe surfaces, sweep/ hoover 2-3 times a week and one wash load every day, then a Sunday morning I will spend a couple of hours doing the whole house (washing bed sheets, cleaning kitchen properly, mopping floors, shake and vac carpets)

This is my general plan. 2 kids and 1 dog with a small house but we are out all day. If you’re home during the days it is harder to keep tidy and clean, in my view.

Morning:
Empty dishwasher
Washing on and out - 1 load
Tidy after breakfast (dishes into dishwasher, clear off table) and showers (hang towels, dry down/dust bathroom and run a brush around toilet)
Make beds
Run the vacuum around living areas for 5 minutes

Evening:
Bring in fold and put away washing
Tidy up all rooms from the day (everything has a place so this takes 10 mins)
Clean the kitchen after dinner and turn on dishwasher

Weekly:
Spend 1.5 hours cleaning bathrooms and floors and dusting (it’s a small house though!)
Change sheets and wash
Wash all towels (changed 2 times a week)

Quarterly:
Declutter and purge (this is the key to success - less stuff is less cleaning)
Deeper clean and windows

Thank you all so much. I’ll have a look at the Organised Mum method now!
