Konmari converts 2019 assemble!

I’m almost done with Marie Kondo’s book and I am buzzing with excitement about transforming my home by letting go of old belongings.

This morning I went through my clothes (not shoes, bags coats or scarves yet) and got rid of 2.5 100L bin liner’s worth! I already can’t believe how much space I’ve created.

Planning to do the second half of clothes tomorrow and then convince DH to do his. I’ll do DS’s one day next week when he is back at school (will be impossible with him in the house).

Going to try and go through the categories in strict order and devote at least one of my 2 free afternoons a week to it until I’ve been through everything in the house.

DH has agreed to watch the Marie Kondo series on Netflix with me and I’m hoping he will get involved.

I really think this will improve my mental health and make me calmer and happier.

I’ve just ordered the book after being inspired by the show! I’m feeling pretty excited about it Grin

Reading the book as I type! Came on to ask a question, will start a different thread as I need the views of those who have already Kondo'd Grin

DH filled a bin bag full of clothes whilst I was out this evening. I’m so proud!

He hasn’t learnt the method but I’ve been trying to explain it to him

Well didn’t manage any Konmari-OMG yesterday but did the second half of my clothes today instead. Another (almost) 2 bin bags full gone of shoes, bags, scarves and coats.

I’m feeling so empowered by this it’s bizarre!

Just settling down to watch the second episode of the Netflix series now feeling great and energised!

I have filled over thirty bags this morning with clothes from a family of four. I honestly cannot believe the amount of stuff I have carried from home to home.
I wouldn't actually have classed us as having that much!

littlecloudling · 05/01/2019 13:35

@OpalIridescence that's the thing, with the exception of a few homes, most of the houses on her show look pretty normal. Not major hoarders. I feel queasy when I see drawers that aren't folded in the kon Marie way now!

Opal 30 bags!! Thanks insane.

Same with me, I have always been fairly good at having regular clear outs and I already do a lot of the stuff that she recommends, but on reading her book I’ve somehow been pushed the extra 10% and it’s made me realise that I’d stil been hanging on to so much stuff I didn’t want, need, or even realise I had.

If I didn’t need to do desperately do some other housework I’d move into DS’s clothes this afternoon, but I plan to do them on my afternoon off next week.

Next weekend I’m forcing DH to do the rest of his clothing/shoes etc and I should be able to manage books too as we don’t have too many. But I do have the habit of hanging on to books I’ve had years but never read. Time for them to go!

I know! I thought I did quite regular clear outs but apparently not. When I started I was going to drop a couple of bags to charity shop. Instead, I have a collection van coming round this week to pick it all up.

I still have all the sentimental stuff to do, had a quick look and can see I have favours and name cards from other people's weddings from years ago etc. Why do we keep all of these things?

Ha! The folding method! I watched the programme and thought 'not a chance' but now I am sold.

Feels surprising light to let go of it all doesn't it?

Am eyeing my children now checking they still 'spark joy'. Don't worry, safe for now!

I was sceptical (is that the right spelling?) of her slightly more bonkers ideas about thanking things and letting them go but my god it works!

I sat and thought about why I still had 3 separate bags earlier, and managed to seperate myself from each one emotionally, thanked them and put them in the charity bag.

I have sorted through and kept those same 3 bags several times before over several years. I may have used them each once or twice over the same time period but I really really don’t need them. Gone and yes I feel so light.

I’m going to keep posting here even if it turns into just me keeping track of what I achieve, and look forward to reading back through at the end.

Anyone with me?

I read the book a couple of years ago and did nothing Blush. I binge watched the series on netflix ( 1st month free) and have done my kitchen. Finally chucked all the bits of my food processor that I have never used. Clothes are my downfall and this is my challenge this week. I have kept all my old tins, boxes etc for storing small bits.

I love her, she is so serene. I might have hoarding tendencies and buy second hand so not spending lots. I have reassured myself should I chuck something vital its not a biggie I can just buy it again, this is helping me let go.

What I haven't got to in the book yet is where to get rud of stuff to. Does she address this? Part of why I have so much clutter is because I cant bear to just throw things in the bin if they might have some use to someone other than me- charity shops have benefited so far but is this the best way to do things using her method?

I still haven’t read the last chapter so maybe in there, but no I don’t think it does semi.

I also do not like the idea of creating so much waste and plan to donate as much as possible or rehome bigger items via local Facebook groups (although ill have to reactivate as I’ve come off Facebook for now). However at the end of it all it’s still a waste whether it sits in our homes or goes to the tip IMO.

I’ll be as careful as I can to make sure all ware is separated into the appropriate containers at the top and not just throw it in general waste unless absolutely necessary. But going forward, completing this process will hopefully mean that I buy less and create less waste in future.

I use freecycle to rehome stuff, its a bit of a faff and people don't turn up etc but I have a garage to store stuff in. I also use charity shops and we have local reuse charities that take all manner of stuff and are less fussy than the main stream charities.

Then in my area, they are pretty good at the tip at selling anything usable- they have a shop! Only the tat gets sent for recycling.

Its a bit of a faff but overall I am not just binning stuff, so am happy.

Just had to post to say I love Marie Kondo! I did it a couple of years ago, and can honestly say it changed my mindset for good! Loving her new series on Netflix, which inspired me to go through my clothes again and get rid of a few things. I've found that since reading the book, it's really easy to see what needs to go. I also find that if I'm struggling to know where to put something, the 'right' place soon becomes clear to me. Sorry for the rambling, but I truly found her book life changing! And yes to the person who said how serene she is!

I binged the Netflix series. Loved it. I've not read the book but did have a general idea. I'd already done much of the house with the TOMM cleaning method. This pushed me one step further. I'm going to do the kids clothes this week.

Here are my towels now

I’m on episode 4 of the series and I am so completely sure that I do not want to have to do this when I’m retired, with 30-odd years worth of stuff to go through.

3 bags went off to the tip today (clothes recycling mainly) and im taking 3 bags to the charity shop tomorrow.

Can’t wait till Thursday when I will have time to do some more.

I love her!

I halved my clothes yesterday - my mum has done hers today!

You need to watch Consumed on Netflix too!

Just watched first 3 episodes and then piled all my clothes onto my bed!!
I thought I had been ruthless a couple of years back in getting rid of unnecessary clothes...anyway just filled another 3 bin bags and I am going to start folding this week.
I cannot believe how much room I have in my wardrobe and drawers! Grin

I kondo'd a few years ago and have kept up the drawers folding but did a bit of binge buying (favouring a new 'look' ) having lost weight before Christmas and I know I need to have a bit of a ruthless wardrobe overhaul. My teenage DD had a weekend clearout with my help and she is remarkably ruthless; she doesn't hesitate about chucking anything she doesn't love, whereas I'm thinking about what things cost or how little she's worn them. She's not an extravagant shopper so perhaps has the Marie Kondo gene or maybe it's that generation and the way they can buy the latest fashion fix in Primark for next to nothing: easy come easy go! Has anyone else found their teenagers are better at Kondo-ing than they (me!) are?

I also watched consumed- total opposite to kon marie in style!

I am supposed to be tackling my clothes but I am batch cooking instead.

I have done all my cookware, kitchen drawers and tupperware - my drawers and cupboards spark joy now.

This year I am going to work through my whole house. I am struggling with my craft stuff, I have several unfinished projects and they do spark joy. I will gather everything up, chuck out the junk and box up nicely. So if I finally get time I can start them again.

I love seeing all the pictures, I must take some before and after pics.

Ohh will have to have a look at consumed too then.

Although I will stick with the Kon-Mari method as it resonates with me.

This thread is helping to keep me motivated! How long are you all planning for the process to take? Are you giving yourselves a deadline to work towards?

Report
User5trillion · 07/01/2019 18:39

STINKY, I think I need to set myself a deadline, my initial enthusiasm is fading! I work part time so this friday I will tackle my walk in wardrobe. I have hardly any clothes that fit me but loads that I was going to slim into, letting them go is like admitting defeat in my weightloss battle - I might just chuck them up in the attic with all my other slim clothes. Hmm.

I will also tackle the kids clothes, they have both had a massive growth spurt so could do with a clear out of their drawers.
