New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

Great! Another new thread! Grin I'm definitely feeling determined for this new year.

Me too. Do you have any resolutions sandandsea? I had about four last year - all related to decluttering - but I can't remember what they were.

The only resolution I consistently did was to always empty a handbag when I started a new one - I think all my bags are empty now.

Today I have sold a game and I have taken some child's boots to be recycled.

Yayy, new thread Grin

Today DH did a big tidy while I entertained DD. Got the recycling out and we ate some of the Xmas biscuits.

Didn't get any shredding done last night and I'm working tonight so that'll be a job for the new year. I can probably go through the actual box tomorrow night and sort into piles ready to go.

Used up some old toiletries today too only a hundred other things to get through now

Resolutions?
-Only keep clothes I actually wear. Same goes for DH.
-No unecessary purchases, mat leave from may and there won't be any money, need to start being super frugal from right now.
-Use up food from the cupboards before doing any more shopping, keep checking and make lists before hitting Sainsbury's.

Right, off to work. Have a lovely evening all :)

Can I join? I'm going to need all the help I can get. We already needed to declutter, but weren't doing very well, and suddenly hings have got worse: we are clearing MIL's house and have acquired more stuff!!

We have taken a car-full of bags to the tip and did 2 charity shop runs. There's plenty more stuff in the house still to deal with as well as about 10 RUBs (35-litre size) in our hall.

I need to work on some key phrases to use with DH, along the lines of "if you keep this thing, which thing [of ours] will you throw out to make space for it?". I fear it will be hard work. Anyone had experience of this situation?

I did a whole months worth in one fell swoop yesterday (I had to bribe my DS with a MacD take-out to help me carry the bags Wink )

I have some sheets , pillowcases, clothes (mainly leggings) and DS needs to sort through his PJs . Not sure where these will go, they're useable but not sellable .

I have another couple of kitchen things that I'll get DH to drop off.

I've decided to buy no more shampoo/conditioner until its all done then I;m going to stick with Body Shop Ginger or Aveda Shampure for DH and I .

I haven't taken the Christmas decorations down yet , that'll be on Jan 1st .

I bagged up some more outgrown clothes, and several pairs of shoes. Two pairs have never been worn. Bought in a sale, then lost in the clutter. Too small by the time I found them.

There's a set of books I don't want, but always put back on the shelf. Today, I put them in the declutter spot in the utility, and they're going out at next opportunity.

Recycling collected this morning. Will fill up the paper tub again asap. I tend to forget if I leave it until the night before.

Can I join please? Getting on top of the clutter is definitely going to be my New Years resolution.

I started yesterday. All the random shoe boxes went to the recycling centre. Today a box of clothes and a box of shoes went to the clothes bank.

IWill - I have been helping my DM downsize for 3 years

Gah!! Downsizing is in our own plans, and is one reason I've been trying to declutter. 3 years, eh?

Hope some of your ruthlessness rubs off on me!

Can I join please? I love the idea of one thing a day. Can I bank the extras when I do >1 thing a day though 😬? I've Kondo-d before, but I think DH and I have mild hoarding tendencies.

@StealthNinjaMum - Yes, I always set goals for the NY. I think my decluttering goal is to continue on this thread; to continue getting rid of one thing a day, or the equivalent, or more.

I've been keeping a list and I'm going to work through it as I feel drawn. I'm also going to count a few decorating and other jobs which I've been putting off.

I'm away from home at the moment but will be on it again soon.

I’ll join. My house is full to bursting. It’s dragging me down. We’ve had a mini declutter over Christmas, defrosting the kitchen freezer and doing a ‘stocktake’ of our chest freezer. Also tidied the cupboards and the Tupperware. The kids have cleared out old books and dd2 has a big bag of clothes she no longer wants. So tomorrow I’ll take it all to the recycling depot along with piles of cardboard. It’s a small start but it’s a start.

Ooooh yay, time for me to join too! I've read some of the previous threads. I'm on maternity leave with a 4 month old son, did a huge amount of decluttering before he was born as all the 'stuff' was dragging me down. House is easier to keep on top of now, but obviously lots of baby-related furniture, clothes etc have arrived, plus Christmas stuff. Looking forward to participating in this thread!

Gosh I would love to join this thread and find the time to post regularly! I have a house full of stuff needing to be decluttered. Nothing ever looks tidy and I think it's because we don't have a proper place for everything. At the moment we have a cleaner for 2 hours per week but I would like to get to a stage where that's not needed and in 2 hours I could do a quick once over myself as we really need to save the money. The mental blocks to decluttering for me seem to be a lack of time and anxiety which has become significantly worse since a couple of extremely stressful events this year.

Yesterday I sold a carrier bag of baby clothes so that's one thing gone! Goal for today is to deal with a pile of things down the side of my daughter's cot and wash some more baby clothes to either pack away and keep, or add to the Facebook selling pile.

We have a street library locally and I deposited 3 books there's yesterday but ended up taking 4 light reads! They will be returned once I'm finished with them though.

I definitely find it easier to keep everything tidy and clean when there's just less stuff everywhere. And I find that when I do tidy and de-clutter, I'm surprised by what we've bothered keeping.

Yes, stuff definitely gets in the way of cleaning and tidying. I've only ever missed one thing I've decluttered. Was once looking for a jumpsuit for a night out, then realised I'd given it to charity. But then I remembered why I'd given it away, and I didn't miss it anymore. Must have charity-shopped hundreds of things and can barely remember what any of them were! Excited to get momentum going again.

I am trying to Marie Kondo but it just seems such a huge job. My problem is my house looks really clear and actually quite nice but I have cupboards in every room and so many drawers and units and they are all full to bursting! Things just get rammed in when I'm tidying in a panic so nothing has a place, for example there are probably 5 different places in the house for nail polish. It's so disheartening. I need to tackle this in 2019 and hopefully this thread will encourage me along.

I’m still here!
Send me positive vibes because I’m going into DS’s bedroom which is squalid. He has had to have a course of steroids as his chest is so bad so it really needs doing 😬

Welcome to the all the newbies and thanks Stealth for the new thread.

Got three glass jars out yesterday which I had saved for my mum for jam making. Going to start finding homes for Xmas gifts today, hopefully. We also got a lot of practical things like slippers, shower gel (so much for my plastic reducing efforts!)

My maternity pay is ending this month so need to be a bit frugal too, an going to focus on using up food in the freezer. I did sort it all a few months ago but just find it easier to buy fresh. DH anyways wants to eat what he fancies rather than what needs using up which drives me mad and means lots of stuff being frozen as meal plans are changed at the last minute.

Going to have a think about new year goals now!
