It can be a lot of messing about and some people really don’t enjoy it and in that case I would suggest getting a pre-lit fake one or not having a tree at all. There’s no law that says you have to have one

But then aren't I ruining it for them? I was right to dread it - they are both on their rooms on their phones whilst I have been at it for an hour - grrr. Youngest came down to check on the lights, said it needed to be more bushy and fiddled with two branches and has now gone back upstairs. I feel like a Christmas slave never mind an elf!

Yes, I hate clutter!! I am a neat freak.
I have as little amount of stuff out as possible in my house, but I still spent far too long this morning, cleaning and dusting in preparation for getting everything out. My 2 kids have a mini tree and various ornaments to go on their windowsills, and I was planning on getting those out from the loft today, but I just couldn't face it after dusting round everything else
The tree will go up this weekend.

Spoiling it for them? It sounds like they’re not really that bothered if they’re upstairs on their phones whilst you’re grafting trying to make things nice for them.

I know! But then they came downstairs and were uber-excited! So, kind of worth it for the 10 mins of warm glow. It took 120 minutes of effort though!

Glad it had a happy outcome but I don’t think that it would be too much to ask for them to help you next time, all part of the fun.
