Please help me construct the most comfiest bed set up

Indulge me please, I'm on a slow night shift and thinking of my bed ....
What would be your dream bed set up, and by that I mean, mattress, duvets, pillows and actual bedding.

I currently have a rather elderly memory foam mattress and one of those shaped neck pillows but I'm hoping to replace these in the not too distant future. I have also been thinking about saving up a bit more and really treating myself to a whole new bed set up but don't have a lot of money so wouldn't want to make any costly mistakes!

For example, I'm not sure if a feather/or down duvet would be to hot for me. Any recommendations of good retailers to begin my search, thanks.

My perfect bed set-up is....

Two separate double beds so I don’t have to put up with DP’s fidgeting!

We have sprung mattresss with integral memory foam toppers. Weren’t super expensive but well reviewed on Amazon.

4 feather pillows on each bed, and 4.5 tog fibre duvet on mine, thicker on his, as I find feather duvets too warm. I’ve been sleeping with just a duvet cover for weeks now though.

I don’t have a v pillow but I have a couple of those drought excluder sausage cushions which I can pop behind the regular pillows for a bit more support if I’m sitting up reading etc.

We get into each other’s bed for a cuddle before sleepy time, but I do love having my own space. Always try and get twin beds on holiday now too!

I have, pocket sprung mattress, no synthetic fibres, so wool, latex, cotton etc. Duvets and pillows are feathers/down, and bedding is 300 count Egyptian cotton. Love my bed :)

Vispring mattress, down topper, goose down duvet (have different one for summer), mix of pillows with feather and down bottom and slim down on top. Cotton bed linen, although linen is lovely if you have the time and money. Fragrance for the room - Neom. DH has own room. No TV etc. Cup of herbal tea and a good book. Bliss.

Down pillows. Wool duvet as recommended by Mumsnet. Also got a silk one for summer. Highest count cotton covers and sheets as possible.

Mattress is a memory foam one. And I like it more than I anticipated.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like I might have to investigate pocket sprung mattresses on tonight's shift.

For those using a down pillow, how much support does it give your neck? I mostly like posh hotel set ups but generally find I have to faff around a lot to get the pillows comfy and often fold them in half which invariably gives me a cricked neck by morning.

I know about high thread count cotton bedding so I will definitely add that to my wish list.

Before you spend your money I'd say keep looking for advice and information which is specific to your needs. A comfy bed isn't one size fits all as a lot depends on your shape, size and how you like to sleep, whether you get overheated or feel the cold, the weight of bedclothes you prefer, the size of your room of course and importantly your budget.

Google for hotel beds and hotel linens and take from that what suits you specifically.

I would say buy the best you can afford and invest in a good mattress topper plus quilted pillow protectors.

Totally disagree with pps. Love our king size solid memory foam, ancient though it may be. Not sure how concerned you are with aesthetics but... our bed frame is oak, and a bit battered now which I think adds to its appeal. We have "soft and something" sheets from JL, 4 (boring foam) pillows, thread count 400+ always in crisp white and a several different duvets for the different seasons and a single bedspread laid widthways across the bottom to look pretty and for the pampered dog to sleep on. This will sound absolutely crazy until to you try it but I have fleece blankets on the bed instead of sheets! It started as I am hypothyroid and feel the cold in winter but they are so snuggly and soft that I’ve carried it on in the summer and it’s not too hot. Try it!

Superfine with zip link mattresses so dh doesn't bother me. We use as two singles as I like to be tucked in but he doesn't.
I like a single cotton fitted sheet high thread count. Brushed cotton draw sheet tucked in tight. Single Wool duvet and thermal blanket.
I just have cheap duvet cover.sets ad they never actually touch me.
The single mattress each and duvet changed our lives.

I love Premier Inn beds and bedding, so plan to have one of those next time I buy a bed, I've managed to find a stockist for their pillows so I already have those, and after stayin in a hub hotel I bought a wool duvet. Just need to save for the new bed...

Down pillows (Soak and Sleep) and silk pillowcases (John Lewis), both gorgeous.

Down duvets (John Lewis), one for summer (2 tog I think) and one for winter (10 tog I think).

100% cotton or washed linen duvet covers/sheets, actually using the linen more and more (as I don't have to iron it) just sometimes it feels a bit warm.

Thank you all for replying. I haven't had time to do any investigations yet but I am planning to early next week.

I already use a silk pillowcase which has improved my morning bed head 1000%, will let you know if it helps keep the wrinkles at bay once I've had my eyes retested in a couple of weeks - eek!

I see that you wonder about the heat of the down duvets. I only started using these the past couple of years but now I have...there's no going back!

In the winter it is so light yet almost instantly cosy and in the summer it seems to regulate my body heat keeping me cool when needed (although not this summer; it's been a case of sheet only)

I've found the wool duvets to be excellent. We got ours from Baavet - have a look at the bargain section for slight seconds. My DS loves his wool filled pillow but I don't like the texture and prefer standard fibre filled. Love our wool filled pocket sprung mattress too!

Thanks Lexer , yes I am concerned about being too hot and really can't afford to make any costly mistakes.

I want to spend sensible money on (hopefully) a new mattress. As I said in my op I currently have a memory foam one (from dreams I think so certainly not top of the range) that is coming to the tail end of its life but I can live with for a while yet.

I've just got to the stage (age) now where the phrase about spending decent money on shoes & your bed really resonates 😀

So far regarding actual duvets I think I'll be looking at silk or wool, I don't really have the space for seasonal ones so am hoping to find an all year one that I can supplement with a throw in the colder months.

Any recommendations for good online sites?

Wool duvets are very hot - year round. They absorb your body heat then reflect it back at you. I had a Baavet and I found I'd be really cold for the first hour in bed (whilst it absorbed my body heat) and then I'd cook the rest of the night because of all the heat retained in the duvet itself and reflected back at me (even when I had a puppy in cold weather and was getting up multiple times a night to take him out, the duvet felt hot from all the body heat it had absorbed).

Feather and down allow your body temp to regulate - keeping you warm in winter but cool in summer (although I only sleep with a sheet when it's over 20 in the night). Any duvet other than feather and down freezes me or makes me sweat. I have a 7.5 tog as my "all seasons" duvet.

Mattress wise Pocket Sprung with a minimum of 1000 springs.

Also I have a Vispring mattress worth 4k but it was bought as a "seconds" (tiny little tear in plastic packaging allowing a small dust mark (literally less than 5p size) on the underside of mattress) and it cost just under 1k.

I've bought everything from John Lewis or Soak and Sleep. I have a silk duvet too but find it a bit "solid". It's heavy compared to the down ones. The down ones pack away very small.
Oh..I bought linen sheets/duvet cover from H & M and they are lovely (and much less expensive than others). My friend bought from MADE and loves their stuff.
