How to improve horrible council kitchen?

Moved in 5 months ago and it's awful.
They won't upgrade it till 2 years time.
Any ideas how to make it look nicer?
It's so old and out of fashion.
I was thinking change the door handles ..
Can I paint the cupboards?
Any tips ?

New door handles - look at shops through ebay!!
Or spray paint yours black and add black accessories to your kitchen!! Black lino also!!

I thought it was going to be actually hideous or tatty but that looks fine to me

Paint it or change the knobs if you don't like them?

Could I just use gloss paint on them?
Would I need a base coat ?

It looks fine! And you get a new one in 2 years! The worktop doesnt look old it all looks freshers than ours to be honest. Id probably save the money for other things.

You can buy cupboard door paint which doesn’t need any primer or sanding and can be wiped down. I did similar to a solid but ugly council kitchen.

New handles and it'll look like a fairly new kitchen - the cupboards are plain white that's in fashion.

I thought it was going to be an early 90's kitchen, like in the one I've just bought from a housing association, where I cannot afford to replace kitchen so am taking off the wooden handles, painting to make them plain not that weird mottled pattern that was so fashionable in early 90's (needs a good primer on first).

Looks basic but clean and in good nick, I’d leave it if it’s gong to be replaced in 2 years anyway, otherwise it’s money down the drain.

You won't get a smooth high gloss door appearance, using gloss paint. Trust me I've seen results of people attempting that! It looks awful. Even when the council replace the kitchen it will, in all likelihood be with something plain again. They aren't going to fund high gloss doors.

My 90's kitchen that I'm painting the doors of will be grey or white but not glossy.

What you have is fine. It's not at the cutting edge of kitchen design, but it's a council house, so the emphasis would be on durability, and cost.
If it works as a kitchen, that's what's important.

I'd suggest painting the walls a funky colour, new window dressing, mats on floor, and accessories.

Looks fine to me too! But if I had to change something I'd say get new handles.

Can you update the flooring ? It always make a place feel lighter & brighter.

Ditto tiles always make a place look more polished. Try a factory tile outlet. Thinking this is similar and I like the handles

Amazon cupboard wraps they habe loads of diff colours etc maybe think about new handles make a massive difference waiting for my new keys so I can start doing mine x

I used a MDF primer then a farrow and ball paint on my doors - did it about 6 years ago and they still look good (well, as good as shitty old 70s doors can look...but no damage to the paint.)

I like the worktop colour. The cupboards look fine. As PP have said, change to metal handles.

People laugh at it, but decent fablon can make a huge difference.
