HELP! I've totally ruined my 1970s casserole....(pic)..

I put my casserole in at 200c....it's come out totally crazed and a horrible dirty colour, looks as though the dish itself got burnt!

I'm currently steeping it in soda crystals but nothing seems to be happening - what else could I try please?

I don't think you can alter its appearance now but if it still works as a casserole dish then what have you lost? Loads of my dishes look a bit 'cooked' having been used for many years.

What Cleaner probably means is that is it’s not a casserole dish, it might not have been made to withstand casserole temperatures. So may indeed be fucked.

I assumed the OP has had it since the '70"s and had put it in the oven many times but i guess they might have bought it in a vintage place recently and it isn't meant for the oven. What is it OP?

It looks like it wasn’t meant for those temperatures and the glaze has cracked unfortunately. Nothing you can do. It’s niw dangerous as it might collapse if it gets hot again.

Only thing you can do is look for a replacement somewhere like China search or Mr Pottery. Shame OP I did it to one of mine I just still use it. Annoying though

If it's any consolation, in case you don't already know, it's a midwinter piece, and the pattern is called Spanish garden. It's fairly common so you can probably replace it reasonably easily.

I have a dish that I use in the oven all the time and has this cracked look. Are you saying that I shouldn't be using it? I thought it was just the varnish or coating or whatever in it on the outside that cracked, as the actual dish itself still seems fine. ie not cracks all the way through.

@isthismylifenow It will be trapping grot in the crazing (cracks in the glaze), and if it's vintage may be leaching lead. So not ideal...

I was always told you should never soak the outside of pottery as the water is absorbed into the unglazed part at the bottom and when you heat it up to cook in it the water expands and cracks the glaze.

Definitely a serving dish op, so the crazing is permanent I'm afraid.
