Recommendations for very hard wearing floors

Hello, this is on behalf of my brother. Some background: he is living on in our parents' home after Dad died last year. He is a vulnerable adult with mental health difficulties but manages to live independently. DH and I put quite a lot of work into helping him with home upkeep.
Anyway, for various reasons the carpet in the living room is heavily soiled and needs to come out. He contacted a carpet cleaner who came today and said it was too far gone (yay!- we knew that, but bro needed to hear it from someone else). Anything in that room will get very heavy use- food and drink spills, stuff being left on floor, dirty shoes etc. He's also planning on getting a cat.
What would be a good floor covering: vinyl/ lower quality carpet/ laminate? Any ideas of current prices?
Any recommendations / ideas would be gratefully received.

Something moppable! Tile or vinyl. Practicality and cost dependent on how much prep his floor needs. Wooden floors need hardboard down first to level it. Vinyl is usually cheaper. Porcelain tiles wear very well and have amazing choice these days, including lifelike wood appearance.
He can then use rugs which can be easily chucked.

We’ve got Karndean in our kitchen diner and it’s been down 8 years with dogs/kids/spillages/high heels on it everyday and it looks good as new after a mop. It was pricey but has been worth it.

DH who is a lot more practical than me had also suggested laminate plus a rug. Karndean looks great and I think it would be just right. Seems expensive but if it’s going to last it’s worth it. The home also has a problem with clothes moths so that would be taken care of. I need to think how I put it to him, so he doesn’t feel pressured. He’ll probably want the same as was there ( carpet) because that’s what our parents had.

Laminate/wood flooring can get destroyed if there are liquid spills that aren't mopped up immediately. The laminate swells and surface can peel off. Cheap carpet is hard to clean. I would go for Karndean as it's properly waterproof.

Was going to suggest laminate as easy to clean and cheap.

What is karndean? Never heard of it.
