Grubby Stair Bannister

If I use anti bacterial wipes to clean it (which seems to be the only thing strong enough to remove the grime?!) I end up with mega sticky woodwork that attracts more bloody grime!!! Seriously this is minor I know but it’s driving me insane!!
If I use hot soapy water I end up taking the satinwood off the bannister.
HELP!! What does everyone else do??

It sounds like the paintwork wasn’t properly prepared before painting. It shouldn’t be sticky or lift when cleaned.

Bannister may have been waxed originally, hence it's hard to clean now.

I have this problem! Shiny white paint, on windowsill too, and there are marks all over it that won't come off Angry

Magic sponge thingy dampened with plain water.

I do mine with magic sponge and water, apparently cheap white bread works just as well although I've never tried it.

I do ours with baby wipes. If we get them repainted I think we’ll strip them varnish, certainly the handrails if not the spindles too. Dirt won’t show so much then.

If the wipes remove the dirt, have you tried a soft cloth dampened with water to take away the stickiness?
