Last thread was huge, so have started a new one.

I am working through books; where is everyone else?

I have two weeks off soon & have high hopes for progress

I'm having a refresh, as it's er, probably about 3 years since I Kondo-ed. Happy to say 95% of it stuck, and the house feels completely different for it. Went so well that have managed to get rid of 3 rickety ugly garden sheds that were here when I moved in, and had silted up with random garden "stuff". Now I just have one of those garden storage locker things, no sheds, and loads more outdoor space. The locker fits a mower, strimmer, hedgetrimmer, and various garden tools, which is all I need.

The zone that has not been a complete success is the two built-in-hall-cupboards-of-doom. I think I am trying to ask too much of them. Currently they contain: one shelf of medicines/treatments, one shelf of bathroom stuff, and underneath a storage space for seasonal things like the christmas tree and decs etc. I am bad about shoving more stuff in on top though and it all needs sorting. The other cupboard has DIY and tools, DCs craft stuff, my craft stuff, cleaning products. This one should get better fairly soon as it presently has a LOT of part-used paint tins in it, and thankfully the big re-paint is nearly over so should be able to get rid of a lot...hopefully!

On the bright side, everything from those categories is in those two cupboards rather than scattered through the house. It's just there's too much of it, and badly organised!

What's your first goal?

I've also done pretty well, but never really got to komono.

Clothes are all in drawers folded as they should be, paperwork is done, books done, it rubbed off on DH who also did clothes!

I need to look at random cupboards / drawers and kitchen. Lots of komono, much of which needs to go...

Can I try to join in?

Have done clothes and just about books and frequently purge komono so am making progress.

My barriers are :
Time (and head space)
Putting stuff away still, especially if it needs folding...

Another positive is that I try to keep stuff in the same place...

I really need to Kondo the garage, but there's a lot of spiders in there and I'm being a wuss about it!

I have done my clothes and books. I plan on doing Dds' clothes this evening and tomorrow.

Cookbooks are my next section. I am using the Clutterless App which breaks everything down into good, manageable categories

Ooh B1 I love the sound of your hallway cupboard challenge! Go on... it'll feel so good when you've done it! I'm itching to do it!

With bathroom/medicines - could you start there and have a look at the dates on them? Cosmetics have a time limit on them from when they've been open too, a number inside a picture of a little cap. Sorry if you knew this already! Xxx

I have sort of made a start, in that I've painted LO's room today, and half the living room - so that's some more paint tins that can go out the door!

Very little make up in this house, but I didn't know about where to look for expiry dates and definitely need to review, so thank you! The hall cupboards make me feel all "congested" just thinking about them, so I really must make a date in my diary to tackle them.

People on these threads always talk at such length about clothes & books.
Is that really all the clutter you have? I have SO MUCH MORE. Grin
Stuff that doesn't fit into neat categories, I suppose.

Can I join?

Had a storage unit and got rid of a a lot of the stuff from it.. but not enough!

The stuff is just piling up and it's horrible. Feels like all I do is move crap from one room to another. Every so often I spend hours cleaning one room only to spread the stuff around into the other rooms. At the moment the lounge is the only room which is close to how I want it in terms of tidyness. It's pretty empty with no storage, which is not ideal either.

I've been eBaying things trying to get a bit of cash (mat allowance is shit) but not sure I've even made a profit Sad getting to the point now of just wanting rid before I go bonkers.

Anyway hope following along will inspire me to do whatever is needed...

Main issues here are clothes, books, MOUNDS of paperwork, art projects/materials, craft materials, old cards/notebooks, sentimental items e.g. old glassware & ornaments, husband's hobby goes everywhere...

Brexit, that's because clothes and books are easy to control.
Any tips on the other stuff??

Sammy get in that garage!

Brexit conjested Grin

For everyone struggling with komono (random crap) and just moving it around - I hear you and I think the key is:

Just attack it - go to pile, sort for ten mins etc
Then - get it out of the house as quickly as possible.

Really need to do some now, but it's so sunny...

Cookbooks done. Next sub category on the Clutterless app is phonebooks - I think we have 3, so should be easy!

Yay! I've found you!!
I had a look for a kondo thread a few months ago but couldn't find one. I was konverted about 2 1/2 years ago but ran out of steam before I had completed all the categories. Things have been gradually slipping and now I'm almost back to where I started.
I have just unearthed a pile of empty plastic boxes that have been lurking in a cupboard from my last attempt at this...there are now approx 10 big empty boxes Blush
Not really sure where to start now Confused

Clothes and books are the quick wins at the beginning. Komono is a pig.

I have actually made a huge dent in my paperwork disaster zone but still need to shred several feet of paperwork (Bank/Credit card statements going back about 20 years). Being accountant bred I can't make myself get rid of the most recent 6 years but am keeping on top of that when I get each month's statement and file it the oldest one goes!

Kitchen in getting there too - most of my cupboards stay tidy pretty well now as most things have a place they can be put without moving other things so the actually get put there - which is my aim for the whole house!

I've done the bathroom/medicine/cleaning stuff shelves of one of the hall cupboards of doom - remaining shelves are all the seasonal/Christmas stuff and I wasn't feeling up to that today!

Got rid of a bin bag of out of date meds / creams / half-used bubble baths I don't really like etc. Now have one bubble bath for me, two for DC, spare soap, toothpaste and toothbrush in one section. On top shelf, a box each with children's meds and grown-ups. To other people, I might still look over-stocked on calpol, but I prefer knowing there's plenty in the cupboard, as I'm a single parent so it's tricky to go out and get more when DC are ill!

Report
LittleWingSoul · 03/06/2017 21:26

B1 yeahhhh that sounds great! A bin bag is impressive! Is there so much Christmas stuff it can't wait until December? Because otherwise I'd suggest clearing through old decorations you don't want as you take it out. Although I realise that's not really in the spirit of Kondo!

Hiccup just start at the beginning again! Then you get some momentum from clothes etc to get you going...
I can't talk, I've only done clothes and books. I'm moving this week, so the packers are just going to have to cope with moving a load of clutter, and hopefully some will be easy to say goodbye to as I unpack...

Grubby - good luck with the move!
I think clothes will be harder for me this time because for the first time (ever!) I lost weight at the same time as kondoing. Have now put a lot of the weight back on and am desperately trying to fit into the newly purchased smaller clothes.
Going to re-read the book to get motivated!!
The one area that has stayed organised is my kitchen. Everything fits in the limited space I have and mostly feels under control. Just need to apply it to the rest of the dump house Grin

Can I join in? I did it about a year ago when I moved from a huge 7 bed place with unlimited storage to a tiny modern 2 bed. The stuff is creeping up again and I need to Kondo and sort it out. It's becoming increasingly difficult to tidy as nothing has a place and the limited storage I have is full.

I'm going to start with my makeup and toiletries. I went to this fabulous shop called Daiso in America last week, and bought some really good bits and pieces for organising the drawers in my vanity. I've also amassed too many pieces of makeup so I need to do the spark joy process and cull it.
