Hi

Please be gentle. I'm coming out of a major depression slump. Going through a divorce from a hoarder who has left most of his rubbish here. House going on market. Boxes and 'stuff' everywhere. Zero energy and multiple health problems. Help?

Don't get overwhelmed by the task in front of you - instead break it down into lots of small daily tasks e.g. Sort and empty one box or fill one black sack with stuff that you are going to dump. That way, whether you get one or ten tasks done in a day, you will feel like you have accomplished something. Similarly if you're having a day where you don't feel up to, it's only a small task you've put off and not the whole thing. X

Have you got a garage? I would be tempted box up the stuff belonging to your ex and leave it in a boxed/bin bagged pile. Deal with it later when you have more energy, or later on pay someone with a van to take it away (someone reputable, not someone who will just fly tip it).

I would also make one room your sanctuary, that way no matter what happen with your day you have somewhere calm to sit and relax, keep your favorite items in this room, keep all clutter out and keep it tidy. I used to pick a front room or a bedroom for this.

Then do your kitchen, it is where you cook, you need to be able to look after yourself.

If you get time read the Marie Kondo book...it is nuts, but her method leaves you clutter (and guilt) free.
