Freezing milk?

I read an article which said you could freeze milk.

Does anybody do that ?

If so, does the milk taste the same?

Do you leave in fridge to defrost overnight before using it?

I do.
Never noticed any difference in taste.
Try and leave it in the fridge to defrost, but if I don't get it out soon enough I leave it on the draining board.

0hCrepe · 22/04/2017 22:53

I've done it it's fine. Yes just defrost it like anything else.

dwpanxt · 22/04/2017 22:53

I freeze milk an there is not difference at all once defrosted. I used to just plonk the whole litre cartons and even the 2 litre bottles into the freezer but realised that this wont do for emergency cuppas. So now I make my own cup sized frozen milk blocks and these take a short time to defrost. I think Ive got about 4 litres altogether in the freezer at the moment.

quilliambrothers · 22/04/2017 22:54

MIL does it and defrosts overnight on the draining board.

I've tried but the bottle always bulges at the bottom when it's frozen and then I can't stand it in the fridge again...

2015mom · 22/04/2017 22:57

Thanks guy.

We usually run out midweek and I said to OH we will have to get two loads of bread and freeze one and take out mid week, the same will have to be done with milk because occasionally run out midweek

When you purchase do you freeze straight away? How long can it stay in freezer?

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2017 22:57

I might be imagining it, but I think I've heard that semi-skimmed milk freezes better than whole milk.

I have some semi-skimmed in the freezer for emergencies, but I've never actually defrosted it. I probably should get rid of it actually, god only knows how long it's been there Blush

CaulkheadNorth · 22/04/2017 22:59

I buy it whenever it's in the reduced counter and freeze. It lasts ages.

I find it takes longer than I expect to defrost and usually try and to 24 hours in the fridge or 12 in cold water in the sink.

Chasingsquirrels · 22/04/2017 22:59

Freeze it straight away.
No idea how long it lasts.
I only use full fat.
Also freeze bread, unually keep had a loaf out and freeze the other half.

SnugglyBedSocks · 22/04/2017 22:59

Freeze skimmed milk and bread. Got some out from December and was fine.

Yes, you can. You can also freeze butter and cheese. Anyone old enough to remember the Butter Mountain? There was a glut of butter, milk and cheese during the 80's, something to do with the EU.
Anyone on benefits including child benefit was allowed a supply of milk etc. We were advised to freeze any surplus.

Thinkingblonde · 22/04/2017 23:18

Ps, not sure if it would be wise to defrost in the microwave.

2015mom · 23/04/2017 17:10

I've frozen butter before because we were given a case of butter once. Never frozen cheese but good to know so If they are on offer I will get some

Thank you all.

We will be saving money freezing milk & bread at least we won't have to go to the local shop and spend more on milk and bread when we run out in the week

Blocks of cheese eg cheddar go a bit crumbly when thawed. Grated cheese freezes really well & defrosts in an instant for sarnies, sauces, toppings.

delilahbucket · 23/04/2017 17:32

I don't freeze milk, purely because my mum used to do it and it took so long to defrost that I have lovely memories of ice crystals on my cereal Confused. I just can't bring myself to do it! My sister, on the other hand, regularly freezes milk. She didn't eat cereal!

silentpool · 23/04/2017 17:36

We don't get through much milk so I always freeze it. I usually stick it in the fridge to defrost when the current bottle is running low.

missnevermind · 23/04/2017 17:39

Frozen skimmed milk looks exactly the same as frozen breast milk.

Chillidawg · 23/04/2017 17:59

Defrost it on the draining board, occasionally it leaks a little.
And give it a good shake before you open it.
I'll use any tactic to avoid the mid week top up shop. Invariably what should cost £2.57 ends up as 14 items for £20.57.
I meal plan/batch cook so that only frozen veg are needed on a Weds and Thurs.

Crumblevision · 23/04/2017 20:31

I freeze skimmed and semi skimmed and never had an issue. Also, if you are parched and waiting for the milk to defrost to make a cup of tea, stick it in a sink of cool water, this will speed up defrosting

Babieseverywhere · 24/04/2017 20:55

I check my freezer weekly and freeze the following fresh items.

2 x 2 pints of semi skimmed milk. Upright.
4-5 x loaves of bread
1 x block of cheddar cheese
2 x butter
1 x marg
3 x wafer thin beef/turkey/ham
1 x bacon bits
Etc.

Babieseverywhere · 24/04/2017 20:58

Like PP, we are have a tight budget and find running out of basics leads to relatively expensive mid weeks shops, so we try and avoid that by freezing loads :)

That is brilliant thank you all.

I will be topping up with next shop and freeze some milk and bread so that we have some reserves... at the moment that's all we need to do mid week shops for oh and yoghurt ...

Does anybody freeze plain yoghurt or Greek style yoghurt? Is that okay when frozen and defrosted

OP posts:
Chasingsquirrels · 25/04/2017 09:28

Not frozen yoghurt but used to do petit filous without issue.

bekindtome · 25/04/2017 11:12

Once the milk is defrosted how long will it last?
