How to clean a second hand mattress?

I've just bought a bed and mattress for the spare room from a charity. It looks really clean but obviously I need to give it a clean to be sure.

What do I need to do?

Bicarbonate of soda an then a good Hoover?

Yes to bicarbonate of soda. Add in a few drops of tea tree oil too

Do I need to scrub the bicarb into the mattress or just leave it sitting on top of it?

Sprinkle it on, a few drops of oil over the top ( tea tree is anti- fungal and all sorts of other good stuff) , leave to sit - I would leave for a good few hours, then Hoover up

If it's memory foam don't use bicarbonate of soda, I think it eats at the foam

No it's not memeory foam, just a normal mattress.

Thanks everyone I've got it sprinkled and will leave it a few hours.

Also if you can get it outside in the sun maybe. It'll be really fresh.

Oh good idea, it's really sunny and windy here!

Check the seams for bedbugs?

Shudder at the thought! But yes I've had a good look and all clear on that front.

I left the bicarb and tea tree on overnight and it smells lovely now.
