Cleaning/ descratching stainless steel sink?

We've done the kitchen up and the builders generally did a crap job, and in particular the (new!) sink is all scratched, stained and bashed with bits of the wood oil used to seal the worktops stuck all over it. It's been a month now and I've applied copious amounts of elbow grease but I can't get that off and the whole thing just generally looks horrible. What can I do?!

I find the best thing on stainless steel sinks is either a cream cleaner (like Cif), or the old fashioned scouring powder like Vim/Ajax - you'd stand a better chance of getting Vim/Ajax from either local market stall or home bargains etc, although I am sure I may have seen once or twice in the Supermarket
