Vacuume recommendations?

My vacuume was never meant to be a heavy duty machine, just a run around in between cleans. We are about to move house too and the new house is double the size of this one, so I need something good and reliable.
I have 3 children aged 6 and under with another due in a few weeks, the new house is carpeted throughout (apart from bathroom and kitchen). I want one that can do the stairs and can get right up against the wall (ours has a 2 inch gap i then have to get on my hands and knees Hmm) decent suck and doesn't need to be emptied every 5 minutes.

Any ideas? I don't even know where to start, we've always bought what's in the sale, but i want something that's going to work and last this time.

We moved to a much bigger house recently. It's older as well so has very few sockets and I couldn't get to most of them for a few weeks because of all the boxes.

I bought myself a Dyson cordless and I adore it. It's so easy to use that I'm hoovering much more often, I can do the whole house with one charge and I'd generally only have to empty it every two weeks or so (though that's increasing as the weather gets warmer and the cats start shedding more!). And it's light and fun enough that my 6 and 5 year olds fight over who gets to hoover the stairs ; )

Oohhh, I always thought cordless ones were crap! Is the suck good then?

I like my dyson cordless but meile gets a brilliant rating as does the good old Henry but i suppose it depends on what type you want and weight for taking around house

Yes, it's good, and there's a max suction switch if you really need it (I only use that on a very deep rug).

I was thinking a dyson this time round. My mum always used one when we were little, but wasn't sure.

Sebo without a doubt. They make industrial vacs for hotels, schools, hospitals, shops etc. They make a domestic model (x4 extra & x4 pet) that's smaller but built like the commercial models. Ours is 22 this year and never gone wrong. Only ever needed a replacement brushroll.
