My step dad done this in 2 bedrooms, he wasnt craftsman of the year but still done a good job.
Don't know about cost but i imagine it was cheaper than buying big wardrobes.

My DH recently built some along a wall for a friend of ours. She was quoted 2k by Magnet or some such company.

I think it cost her about 1100 all in. She is pleased with them and I have to say even though he is my DH, they are fabulous. He is a fantastic craftsman and pays attention to detail. They are not so good if the person doing it is only ok at DIY. Her DH built the last lot and they looked shoddy IMO. But he is a banker not a carpenter . So if you are going to get them done, make sure the person is a cabinet maker/carpenter and have a look at some of their previous work.

I have done two in our house and could not imagine life without them!

Rather than use wood we studded the frame and then plastered so it looks like the end of the room. When you open the double doors you step right inside, shelves on L and R, a rail accross the whole back, with a shelf above for rubbish and a shelf below for shoes.

southeastastra, I don't imagine that my step fathers were anything near this cost.
More like a trip to b&q for wood for the frames and doors.
UCM's dh has probably built something nicer/bigger/grander than my entire house
