Is life too short to sort laundry

UntidyAn0n · 03/10/2016 21:27

I'm very fussy about sorting loads, whites and colours, darks, towels etc. I put treatments in and have glowing whites. But today I thought stuff it and shoved the days laundry and a colour catcher in the machine and switched it on (wildest thing I've done all year! Wink)
Am I destined for grey whites?

I've NEVER separated a load of washing in my life much to my mothers horror I don't have many white clothes though but even those I do have don't seem to go grey when they have been washed.

Oh and I don't even use a colour catcher!

Life is too short for grey whites though.

I keep whites separate as dingy whites are horrible. We have quite a few too- school shirts and dh's shirts

Just lose a few categories. Lights and darks is enough.

Life is not too short to sort your whites from your darks!

I only do one whites wash a week and it's my favourite Grin I love seeing the kids school shirts and blouses on the line....

I reckon dss mum doesn't separate her washing! His polo shirts are a horrible dinghy grey colour, I've had to teach dp to separate washing and he probably thinks I'm slightly bonkers Blush

I always separate whites! I can't begin to imagine being that reckless! My mum, never does - ave their whites are always greyish and if we're ever away with them I always pretend we don't have any washing if she asks!

I do pure whites and then everything else lumped in together.

I love laundry though & I know I'm nutsGrin

Pale pink

Bright pinks and reds
Navy
Black
Pale towels
Dark towels

The only white wash I do is vests and school shirts. As we're on a thread of laundry, about two years ago I declared I would only wash socks that had been put into the baskets paired. It took a while for them all to get the hang of taking off socks and pairing them straightaway(DH was last on board), but it saves time and eliminates the odd sock problem. I undo them as I put them in the washer and dry them in pairs on my pulley.

I shove everything in together with a colour catcher, soap and zoflora at 30.
It all comes out clean, sweet smelling, and whatever colour it went into the machine.

Only thing I wash separately is woollies; they get a delicates wash with colour catcher and no zoflora.

Omg at unpairing socks before I wash them!!! No chance!

I always used to bung everything in together, but a couple of years ago started separating out the whites and omg you can see a difference.

I think the main culprits of making all the whites grey are black socks, so I never put those in with whites, otherwise I have relaxed again to lights and darks washes.

Well look at you, laundry rebel!! Grin

I love my whites wash so can't imagine ever risking it. Add the ecover bleach & love how sparkling they are. Sad but true.

However I do separate **before washing: I have 3 laundry baskets hanging in bathroom for whites, darks & colours.
(Towels & bedsheets [all white] done separately by laundrette on Saturday and microfibre cloths & mop heads etc done separately during the week as required).

Pre-washing separating has made laundry so much faster & easier: chuck & go! Grin

Even after one wash, whites are greyer when washed with darks, if you put them alongside pristine stuff that has been washed separately. I know this because sometimes a white thing sneaks in!

Also, I use different powder for different washes, and the white powder would bleach the dark clothes?

However, my sorting isn't that detailed: I do whites, brights, and darks and that's it. Occasionally sportswear might have its own wash too. Oh and wool/delicates obviously separate too.

I just bung everything into the same washing basket, then separate out as I take a load down to wash- don't have the space for separate hampers.

Crikey, lights and darks here... But no white school/work shirts to be done. The dedication demonstrated by some here is amazing!

I use washable wipes and a few got into a darks wash by accident, they are noticeably greyer even though I used a colour catcher. I'm not a housework nut AT ALL but I do sort laundry - whites, nearly-whites (like Bretton striped tops or white tshirt with a pattern), colours, darks. Then obviously towels and wipes go separately. It takes very little time to separate a wash and my mother is very proud of how gleaming white my DD's vests are Grin yes really!

I do sort out different loads as I'm not convinced that the clout catcher sheets work. I'm not brave enough to try!
My daughter went to university sept 2015 and she's still got the same box of washing powder as when she moved in.......I'm trying not to think about that too much!!

Buy another laundry basket and separate when you take the clothes off

Sort here,

Whites
Darks
Shirts
Delicates
Bedding
Towels
Underwear (to minimise sorting I do individual washes and drying of underwear)

We all have our own washing baskets plus a whites one which I leave in the bathroom.

My washer is on constantly.

minipie · 04/10/2016 09:55

We do

Lights
Darks
Light delicates
Dark delicates
Towels

Not that big a deal to sort - we have separate laundry baskets for lights and darks so they are pre-sorted iyswim.

OMG! No! Shock

It only takes a few minutes. I have different powders for coloureds an
and whites and different tubs of Vanish. I love to see my whites blowing on the line.

I used to lump everything in together when I lived on my own - apart from delicates - didn't have too many whites and everything was OK.

DH sorts into darks and lights and delicates and that's it. We have two baskets in the airing cupboard and a bag hanging up for delicates. So it's pre-sorted.

If I happen to have a load of towels on own might wash them at 60 'for a treat'. Rock and roll.

You separate out too much.
