Bed wetting cleanup

Youngest DS has wet his bed. Any tips on how to clean a dense foam mattress topper that is soaked with pee? Or should I throw it out. It wasn't hugely expensive but will be a real waste/PITA to replace.

A friend saved a memory foam mattress by soaking as much as possible up with kitchen towel, heavy sprinkling on bicarb which was left in then hoovered up and repeated. She also didn't use it till fully dry /smell had gone! If that fails I've steamed an ordinary mattress but can't vouch for it on foam! Good luck

No tips for wet foam mattress unfortunately nbut a tip for next time is to get a waterproof mattress cover.

Thank you, have blotted all day, will try the bicarbonate and revert to mattress liners... he hadn't wet for 18 months but serves me right for not putting them in just in case!

Re waterproof mattress protector, we have them on all the beds, no bed wetters but Ds1 woke one night and immediately vomited in the bed (very heavy sleeper.) The joy.

It is just for basic stuff like in case I spill a cup of tea or water, and it means the mattress stays pristine rather than stained.

Could you take it outside hang it over a washing line and give it a good washing in the wet area then leave to dry? has been a lovely day here and will be good drying weather tomorrow too....

After blotting well you need something with enzymes to break down the organic compounds that make the smell. Use a sparing solution of bio laundry detergent, maybe whip it up and just use the foam rubbed into the, err, foam... It will be a PITA to rinse. I prefer the liquid because I think it rinses out more easily.

Alternatively, get down to a pet shop and get some enzymatic "pet stain remover" spray designed for carpets and soft furnishings. Spray liberally, leave, blot. Marvellous stuff, designed to attack even the most pungent cat wee smells, but not cheap. We buy the Simple Solution one.

Thanks everyone. I have given up. It's just too dense and too soaked and I have lost the will! Lesson learnt, waterproof covers all the way from now on.

I use the disposable mats drynights but I put them above the sheet. Won't help you now. It it might save a mattress from ruin in the future.

SausageHunter what a despicable thing to say. i have a relative with downs and he is a great guy. why so much ableism on here? i thought MN was a sensible place for people to chat. this sounds like something a Reddit user would say :(

Oh the thread has been infiltrated by sad little 42 year old cunts who live at home and have swiped their mummy and daddy's Harvey's Bristol Cream?

How very sad for them.

Sausage...hooray you got a few responses, what do we do with nasty cunts behind a keyboard? Do they get fed the keyboard?

Emily I don't think Reddit is that bad sure it has a certain "air" about it but there's also so much great stuff done by those on Reddit
