need a new mattress..... Sleeping duck titan or John Ryan Artisan naturals?

WE bought a Tempur mattress a few years ago but very quickly we both hated it. It is hot and for someone with slight OCD (me) I hate the fact the bottom sheet never stays smooth AND it gives me a bad back!!! Tempur had great reviews but since getting irritated with it I have found plenty of bad reviews hidden away on the internet!

Anyway, after a short while we went back to our very ancient but once expensive orthopaedic mattress and gave DS (age 2yo) our Tempur mattress.

The mattress we are on must be 30 years old, so it really is time to get rid. So i have. It has gone!! Leaving me with an urgent need to get a replacement.....

DH is trying to convince me to get a new sleeping duck titan but all the reviews are excellent, which makes me uneasy - too good to be true?, plus it sounds like another memory foam one and sounds very man made.
has anyone tried one? would you recommend it?

My DSis has one of these: www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/product/artisan-naturals/
I like it. She likes it. Does anyone else have one? Would you recommend it?
It ticks my boxes for being fairly natural, no memory foam, pocket sprung and not too expensive.

I think we would go for the Firm option, I am 10 stone & short, DH is 14 1/2 stone and 5'10.

What else would you recommend?

Given that you have already bought one mattress you haven't liked, I think you really should go and try some out. Bed retailers advise you to lie on them for ten minutes or so and they'll often have display mattresses which are half firm/half medium so you can compare. It's an expensive mistake if you don't like it.

I can't comment on the ones you've asked about, but we got ours from John Lewis in the clearance sale after Christmas last year - it was a special buy. Comfiest bed we've ever had.

wowfudge · 12/12/2015 16:54

Forgot to say - we are similar in height/build and DP found the firm mattress more comfortable than the medium, but I couldn't tell the difference so we got the firm.

MindfulBear · 13/12/2015 23:25

we tried loads out last time. spending way over 15 mins on each bed. Sadly the problem we had with the Tempur would not have been replicated in the shop. However some of the online mattress places offer trial periods, so we shall try those

We've just replaced a Tempur mattress (couple of yrs old, saggy and not doing DH back any favours) with this from ikea - best decision ever!

Instant comfort, sheets stay on, no aches and pains in the morning...bliss!

Ikea also do a return if you're not happy policy

ChishandFips33 · 14/12/2015 05:38

Gah! Link takes you to the medium firm one - we got the firm king size. I'm a side sleeper and find it much better than the Tempur.

MindfulBear · 14/12/2015 10:41

thanks you chish& v helpful. sorry to hear Tempur didnt last long for you. a good mattress should last at least 10 years surely?!

We have a john Ryan one, is that the mattress guy, v old fashioned website but full of advice, quite nerdy? Anyway if so - we love it. Really can't recommend it highly enough.

Peach1886 · 14/12/2015 11:24

John ryan every time - everyone who sleeps in our bed (we offer it to guests as no spare room) asks where we got it from as it's so comfortable and they have such a great night's sleep.

ChishandFips33 · 16/12/2015 02:59

I'd hoped so for the money we paid but DH is a hot sleeper so the mattress softened in response to this - he's much nicer to lie with now on the IKEA mattress - lots of natural fibres in it
Yes to the geeky website for John Ryan - really wanted one from them but too much choice and no testing so it put me off after the costly mistake of the Tempur
There's soo much information on JR that you can't help but love it and learn from it!

wowfudge · 16/12/2015 06:33

Our JL mattress is pocket sprung and padded with natural fibres. It really is the comfiest bed ever!

movingonup2015 · 16/12/2015 13:44

john ryan definitely - I have a hybrid 6. very well made, fab customer service and you have 30 days to try and if you don't like it they collect it no questions asked and you get a full refund. If you ring them they will get your mattress spot on for your needs.

Pipnposy · 16/12/2015 13:58

I have the sleeping duck Titan and do really like it. I have the firm one and it took a good few weeks to soften up and to get used to it but now I love it. Only issue is it is way deeper than my old mattress and my sheets don't fit properly.

The problem when buying mattresses online is that what's comfortable for one person isn't right for another and even then it takes a while of sleeping on it to figure out if you like the mattress or not. Do sleeping duck still do the free trial and returns thing? If buying online I would definitely only consider buying if there was a free trial period.

MindfulBear · 20/12/2015 00:57

thx! yes both JR & SD offer a trial period & in fact when yuo look into it both Ikea and John Lewis basically do too.

We have just bought a JR one so fingers crossed!

Ah, have seen you have already bought one, but we also went for a factory bed. We live in Leeds so visited a bed place that makes them to order on site. You choose the fillings, mattress material, divan material, whether to have drawers underneath, what feet etc etc. They talked us through all the options and whether we are hot or cold at night

Ours is a zip and link 6ft bed (couldn't get a 6ft mattress up our stairs without issue so have two 3ft singles zipped together) we have a topper on the bed and you cannot feel the zip at all. We refer to our bed as the cloud Grin

Dh is much heavier than me and we have had the bed 2 years. There is no dent on Dh's side which used to happen on all previous mattresses.

Ours cost £1k for the two mattresses and the divan base.

nikki291 · 24/01/2016 15:14

If you get hot at night and foam is too hot then a latex mattress might be better than memory foam as it lets you breathe more.

I looked at a few Snooze, Eve etc, they all seem to offer the trial.

Not tried any of the JL ones. How did you get on?

DeeDeeSprinkles · 27/07/2016 16:16

I just bough one of these mattresses and I found it gave me the best nights sleep I have ever had. Yes it is a bit deeper than my old one and I had to replace my sheets. But I got £75 off with this Sleeping Duck Discount Code so it helped with the cost of replacing the sheets :)

BenHer · 21/01/2017 18:19

How did you get on with the John Ryan mattress OP?

KensalChris · 24/04/2017 17:09

My John Ryan mattress is comfortable but quickly sagged with loss of support so I'd advise against.

Scubagirl2004 · 03/05/2017 18:06

We have just bought a John Ryan bed and I am sleeping really well now. Don't forget to turn and rotate mattress monthly as the website advises. They mention a new mattress sinking as not all of it is used. Really useful info on mattress maintenance on the website.

We are really happy with ours.
