Ikea duvets

We are in Germany and it's hellish to find a double duvet here which doesn't cost the earth. We currently have one which is just a smidge too small and it drives me insane as I wake up freezing in the middle of the night and have to wrestle it off him. We can't both roll up in it at the same time. But still, I much prefer the double to having two singles as they tend to do here.

I am thinking if I buy from ikea, firstly they have a 220 x 240 sized one, and secondly at least I know all of their bedding will fit it, which is the other issue, as it's next to impossible to find covers and none of them are standard sizes. However, because we're furnishing an entire flat DH is anxious to order online rather than trying to fit everything into our tiny city car.

So -

Should I go for lyocell or polyester? DH point blank refuses feather because he doesn't like "being stabbed" and finds them too noisy and too hot. I have no idea what the difference between these is and the website doesn't really explain it.

They seem to have the same names in DE as in GB but the DE ones are just rated as "Particularly warm" "Warm" "cool" and "All season". I'm guessing that's equivalent to 12/7.5/4 tog respectively.

Not really sure what that all corresponds to. DH doesn't like to be too hot at night and wouldn't want a really hot duvet. But I don't like something which is too cold in the winter. The all season seems the logical choice, but I don't know that we would be bothered changing it. Is 7.5 okay as an in between? Not too hot and not too cold? I can always keep a spare single or a blanket to chuck over me when it gets really chilly at night but it would be nice to have something we can use generally without having to adjust it all the time.

Any particular ideas/thoughts on any particular duvet?

Definitely go for the biggest one, I hate having to wrestle the duvet so I get enough.
We have feather duvets so I can't comment on the other options, but the 7.5 tog one would be a good compromise for you and your Dh.

I'm leaning towards the Lyocell because I am reading that it feels heavier. I do like the heavy feel - it's just more cosy! And it's supposed to reduce sweating and be naturally antibacterial, which sounds good.

All of this is eating into my mattress budget, though

Have a look on groupon for a mattress. We ordered a foam mattress with memory foam topper for the spare bed thinking something more affordable would be fine as it's only used infrequently. It's marvellous, so comfy and I sleep so well in there when I swap because of dh's snoring.

No seriously, I would go for the lyocell 7.5 tog. We actually just bought this for DD1 here in the UK and she reports that it is perfect, not too hot and not too cold. However being a typical almost-teenager i would also swear that she is cold blooded as she goes out in all weather wearing nothing more than a thin Tshirt, sometimes with an unzipped hoodie....

Where in good old Deutschland are you? Could you go to an IKEA, look at and touch and feel the different duvets and bedding, and then go home and order online?

We are in Karlsruhe, so the nearest one is about a 30 minute drive away. I'd love to go but I'll have to convince DH to drive! I'm also working on Saturday mornings at the moment, which doesn't leave a lot of time after we've done the grocery shopping and unloaded that. Germans and their stubborn adherance to Sunday trading laws.

We currently have a giant order waiting to be ordered because we don't move until the end of December, and though you can schedule your ikea delivery, they haven't opened those slots yet. There are around 12 items from that order which can't be ordered online, so we will pick those up in store. BUT, DH is keen to add EVERYTHING possible to the online order, as we'll do the pick up last minute and he wants it all dealt with so he can stop worrying about it. Which I get. It doesn't REALLY make a difference to just hold off on the bedding, especially since we already have adequate bedding and this is an upgrade, but I think he's worried if I hold off on the bedding, I'll hold off on everything We've already ordered half of the contents of the new flat from Mann Mobilia.

So in short - if I can persuade him to take a checking-out trip there this weekend, then we could look at and touch some duvets before ordering online. We could even try out some mattresses there and potentially buy one of theirs, rather than me trying to navigate a confusing system. I've already eschewed the German system of buying a special bouncy wooden frame to place the mattress on, so I expect looks of utter horror in the mattress store when I explain this.

But if we don't get to check it out now, we won't be going to ikea until right before we move, because we have to pick up a desk which it doesn't make sense to carry up/down stairs three times and store for 2 months, when we could just carry it up one set of stairs once, and then make up.

I've budgeted for the €40 polyester one but I think I might upgrade to the €80 lyocell one. This is probably also best if I order online so that DH doesn't see the price and kill me Especially since the bedding sets are €35 each (€20 for the cheaper ones, I was thinking one of each, but now less sure...)

My kids have the four season (synthetic) duvets from IKEA, which I definitely recommend. The Summer and Autumn weight clip together to make a Winter weight according to their sleeping preference.

One word of warning: IKEA single duvets are 150cm wide and normal UK ones are 135cm wide, so you're forced to buy only IKEA covers or have 15cm of ugly bunching at the side where it's too big for the UK duvet cover.
