Anyone has a mudroom?

We are planning to get our own home in by 2016 and are currently in the planning stage. The plans are almost ready and the work will start after winter. Last day DH came up with an idea to include a mudroom in the house to store food items. He saw it in one of his colleagues house and loved the idea of using it as a home storage solution.
We looked into few pics of mudrooms and decided to have one. We are planning to meet the representative from OnWall Solution tomorrow to discuss about this.
Before that I would like to know what do you think of this idea. Is it worth or just a waste of money?

Can't you do it yourself? I just turned a big walk in cupboard into a storeroom.

Isn't it a pantry? I thought a mudroom was for outdoor gear and bootsHmm

That looks more like a pantry to me!
Mudroom (we have one), a room at the back door of the house, where you can strip off muddy wet clothes or wash down boots, pets and yourself after coming from gardening and sporting activities... So a sink, boot drying rack, coat rails and so on. Ours also has washing machine, dryer and some old kitchen cupboards for sporting, camping and diy stuff :)

Surely that is a walk in pantry? I would love a mud room, but to me they are as said above - somewhere for muddy dogs, boots, etc.
We had a pantry in a previous house but knocked it out to make the kitchen larger and fit a table in.

This is our mud room. Cross between a utility and boot room with sink and washing machine. Switch on optional heaters to dry wet stuff if necessary.....

I would love a pantry, but frankly this room is more useful.

I don't think that's s mudroom, if I had one like that I wouldn't want mud anywhere near that stuff!
I have a large utility room which could be a mudroom too I suppose. The garden tap is right by the back door where we hose the dogs if they're really muddy, and it's tiled so we can leave boots etc there. There's a sink and kitchen units (same as the kitchen, the utility room looks like a fitted kitchen) it also has the washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer.

I would have a pantry off the kitchen and a mudroom separately.

That's not a mud room at all. It's a pantry.

And who are Onwall Solution?

And what do you mean by 'Last day'?

This kind of reads like an advertising plug though I'm sure it's not really. Smile

As others, to me a mud room is wher you come in and strip off shoes, mucky coats etc. I'd love one! What you've pictured is a pantry, I'd quite like one of those too tbh but what we do instead is we have shelves in the under stairs cupboard and we store pasta, flour and so on in there, we keep the tub on the go in the kitchen and all the spare under the stairs.

That's a pantry. They're great - I miss my old pantry.

I'd also love a mudroom but it would look quite different. I'd want a sink, coat rack, shelves for shoes and boots etc.

I have a mud room. It has wellies, dog bed, wood basket, recycling, golf clubs, a sink and endless shoes scattered all over the floor. I do like it but it is a bit of a dumping ground.

I'd never heard of a mudroom. I'm renaming my dumping ground right away.
That is a pantry OP.

That's a pantry as other have said.

DGF was a farmer and their house had a bootery. It was next to the back door but only accessible from outside. All muddy boots and overalls were removed there. Very useful stuff on a dairy farm.

I'd have thought a mud room was similar to what I'd call a boot room, the dog sleeps in there, wellies / boots live there (also chest freezer!).

Have a separate pantry which has food in - wouldn't want to mix the 2.

Good grief! Why would one put food in one's mudroom? That's where the 'hunters' & the labradors go!

One puts one's food in the pantry, or at least in one's larder.

Incidentally, with 3 dirty boys & an equally dirty dog, I'd love a dedicated mudroom!

I think the Canadians are getting mixed up with a Mud Room and a Pantry.
Learnt something new today though, Mud Room is new to me.

There was one in this house when we moved in, but it was called a downstairs shower room.

We ripped it out the day we moved in to have a larger kitchen.

Now my entire kitchen is muddy. Hmm

In working on turning part of the garage into a utility/mud room.

It has taken DH 8 years to agree. Grin

It's where I will store my water and tins incase of major disaster. It may look a bit like a pantry, but won't be!

Oh my god, I think I got all confused. DH said that this was a mudroom and started looking for images but I guess he got it wrong. Thank you so much everyone for sorting this out. Or else we would made a fool of ourselves in front the reps.

When they asked you how many dogs you had and what breed, or what your hobbies were, it would have descended into a comedy sketch, though, sorry, but that's funny.

AnittaVan think about how YOU want to live in your house. Do you have dogs or kids? Are you going to get any soon?
Pantry are great if you do a lot of cooking. Boot rooms are a god send if you are outdoorsy people. A utility room gets the slightly grubby stuff out of the kitchen. Decent storage cupboards/ rooms are a wonderful, useful luxury.
Decide what you and DH need and want. Steal good ideas from friends. Tell the planners what you want and don't be too swayed by fashion. You are going to be the people living in your home. Make sure it fits with your lifestyle. Not everyone is so lucky as to get to design their own home.
